Even when it’s hot out (and it’s always hot since we’re in Singapore), I’m always down for my beloved hotpot. Like no other dish lets you customise your ingredients, mix and match sauces, and enjoy with friends quite like hotpot.
Hotpot is often seen as a luxurious dining experience but what if you’re looking for something upscale for a special occasion (like CNY dinners or date nights)? Where would you go?
Well, one place you can go is Chamoon Hot Pot at Scotts Square. They pride themselves on being the top clear soup individual hotpot in China, and now they’ve launched their very first international outpost.
Right off the bat, Chamoon Hot Pot is uber-luxurious. As soon as I walked in, it felt like stepping into one of those premium Chinese restaurants — you know, the kind where they host elegant traditional weddings?
Matching the ambiance, the food served is just as premium. I shared a table with three other diners and we were presented with their most sumptuous menu — Tiger Prawns, Abalone, Premium Beef Set For 4.
Naturally, the hotpot journey only started when I chose my soup base, which I opted for the Singapore-exclusive Mala. The Mala, along with the other soups, are done a little differently as they’re infused with matsutake mushrooms, known for their nourishing benefits.
I’m not sure if their hotpot is exactly healthy, but one thing’s for sure — the soups were incredibly flavourful and satisfying.
You can also get their Truffle-Based Matsutake Mushroom, which is a speciality here. The truffle wasn’t overpowering at all — it added just the right touch without overwhelming the soup.
As for the sauces, you won’t be customising them like at other hotpot places. Instead, you’ll be presented with a seafood dipping sauce, Chinese chilli oil, and shoyu.
The menu comes with three seafood dishes, four meat dishes, three vegetable platters, dumplings, fruits, and Chinese tea.
As you might expect, the seafood and meat dishes are incredibly indulgent, so prepare to treat your taste buds to rich, melt-in-your-mouth flavours.
The shoyu is for the Norwegian salmon and trust me, I couldn’t stop reaching for it due to how meaty it was. Feel free to cook it in the hotpot but I like my salmon as a sashimi.
Another highlight was the Tiger Prawns. They were so fresh that their claws were still moving around when placed on our table. As someone who hates peeling prawns, you can imagine my relief when the staff took care of it for me.
I also enjoyed the Fresh 5-Head Abalone. For the best texture, give it a quick dip in the hotpot just long enough to keep it tender and avoid any rubberiness.
When it comes to their meats, the A4 Japanese Wagyu and New Zealand Lamb are standouts. Both were exceptionally tender, with the Wagyu’s rich marbling melting in my mouth and the lamb offering a perfect balance of juiciness and savouriness.
The Chinese tea is brewed right in front of you, offering a perfect palate cleanser after a rich meal. Unlike most places where the tea flavour is subtle, here it’s robust (the tea lover in me was glad).
Ok, I won’t sugarcoat it — the menu is on the pricey side at S$139.50 per person. But hear me out! Consider it a splurge for those times when you’re feeling fancy or craving top-notch ingredients like wagyu.
Or, you can opt for their a la carte menu, featuring meats starting at a more wallet-friendly S$28.
As mentioned earlier, Chamoon Hot Pot is truly designed for those special occasions when you want to go all out.
