Speciality bakeries are a dime a dozen these days, but few are as unique as Donatzu, a French-Japanese bakery and former home-based business turned brick-and mortar-store in NEWest. All I can say is — it’s donut time!
Donatzu prides itself as a locally-founded pastry brand that focuses on “premium, high-quality Japanese-French delights”. Hybrid pastries have taken the entire world by storm, and these croissant-donut hybrids, also known as Japan Ring Pies, may just become your new favourite baked good.
Unlike regular yeast or cake donuts, these puff pastry lookalikes have a flaky and crisp croissant-like exterior, with fluffy and chewy insides, and are finished off with a caramelised glaze. They are best served warm alongside a piping hot cup of tea — the perfect teatime snack.
At the time of writing, there are six flavours available, including the likes of Crispy Pineapple, Apple Earl Grey, Mix Berries with Cheese, and Japanese Sweet Potato, all priced at S$20.80 per box. for those who can’t get enough of the King of Fruits can even find the premium Awesome Durian (S$24 per box).
Keep an eye out for upcoming flavours like Matcha Red Bean, Cocoa Hazelnut Espresso, and the sweet and tangy Lemon Mango.
All Ring Pies are sold in boxes of six — you can purchase a box of the same flavour or mix and match (ideal for those who want to try ’em all).
Westies are in luck — a second outlet was also opened at Bukit Panjang Plaza in mid-September 2022, so you don’t have to travel too far for your Donatzu fix.
