There’s the famous cat island in Japan, snake island in Brazil, and now pig island in Thailand. Say what? Yes, you heard that right — there’s an entire island dedicated to pigs.

Pig Island, officially known as Koh Mudsum, is a small island just south of the popular Koh Samui in Thailand. It’s rather crazy to think that an island known for its nightlife and scenic beauty has a neighbour that’s home to a quirky population of friendly pigs.

Surprisingly, getting to Koh Mudsum is a breeze. All you need to do is choose your preferred tour operator and pick from their selection of day trip packages. Most tours depart from the southern tip of Koh Samui, followed by a 30-minute speedboat ride to the island.

For the adventurous thrill-seekers, some tour operators even offer the option to hop on a jet ski — adding an extra dose of excitement to your island-hopping adventure. But it should come as no surprise that this option tends to be costlier.

So, what exactly can you do at Pig Island? Interact with the pigs, of course! If you’re lucky, you’ll be immediately greeted by a group of pigs roaming around on the sand or swimming in the crystal-clear blue waters.

The pigs won’t bite at all. In fact, they’re incredibly friendly and not at all afraid of humans, so go ahead and pet them. And, no, they don’t stink nor are covered in mud (I know some of y’all have this thought).

Some lucky visitors might even get the chance to swim with the pigs — if they manage to win their hearts first! Here’s a little insider tip to gain their affection quickly: give them some fruit and veggie snacks, especially watermelons.

Other activities you can do on Pig Island include snorkelling and kayaking. However, a classic beach picnic and some relaxation won’t go wrong either.

Just be sure to keep an eye on your snacks as there’s a certain four-legged friend who might help themselves (*side eye*).

Entrance to the island costs 50 baht (S$1.95) per adult, while it’s free for children.
