With three outlets in Bedok, Serangoon, and Dhoby Ghaut (Cathay), this popular ice cream joint best known for its indulgent lava cookies, is a name most of us are familiar with.
If you’re on the lookout for an innovative new dessert to sweeten the deal, here’s a recent launch that had me making an impromptu visit to Kooks Creamery — lava waffles.
During our visit to the Cathay outlet, I was pretty much blown away by the array of ice cream flavours on display. I spotted fairly unique and enticing options like Brown Butter, Blue Chai Hokkaido Milk, Blueberry Honey Yoghurt, and Milk Cereal (I’ll be back for you, Arabica Coffee and Lemon Curd Tart).
But we were set on trying the real star of the show, the lava waffles.
Choose for your waffles to be topped with either light, smooth, and airy Chocolate (S$8.50) or Matcha Lava (S$9) — we opted for the latter (obviously!) and topped it off with a scoop of Black Sesame (S$4.30) ice cream.
The lava ganache wasn’t too sweet, with the earthy bitter notes one typically associates with good-quality matcha, and paired well with the dense waffles. Not bad at all.
We also spotted three new plant-based, dairy-free flavours produced in collaboration with oat milk brand Oatside — Strawberry Balsamic, Chocolate Peanut Butter with Cacao Nibs, and the one I had my eye on from the get-go, Dirty Matcha (my favourite beverage but in ice cream form).
Oozy gooey goodness in the form of a scoop of Dirty Matcha (S$6.30) atop the signature Matcha Lava Cookie (S$7.50) — a fun (but pricey) dessert that’s worth treating yourself to on those particularly awful days.
These decadent desserts are available at all three outlets, so you can head down to the location that’s the most convenient.
