We can’t deny that Toa Payoh is one of the best foodie neighbourhoods filled with both familiar favourites and hidden gems.
If you’ve got a craving for affordable Western food, Ling Maison is a relatively unknown place you need to check out.
Tucked away in the Jackson Square coffeeshop (which also houses Chef Kang’s Noodle House), this humble Western stall has received rave reviews for its generous portions, friendly service, and of course, delectable dishes.
Ling Maison switches things up by incorporating French and Asian flavours into the standard Western stall fare we’re all familiar with.
For instance, the Dory Fillet (S$7.90) is served with Thai-style salsa, while the British classic, Bangers & Mash (S$10.90), comes with edamame instead of the usual (mushy) peas.
Instead of the usual Chicken Chop (S$7.90) or Sirloin Steak (S$12.90), why not try the Salmon Hollandaise (S$12.90) or Hawaiian Smoked Chicken (S$8.90) for a change?
The enticing Crispy Cheesy Chicken (S$9.90) is Ling Maison’s take on the chicken cordon bleu — chicken breast is rolled, battered, and deep-fried, before being topped with ham, melted cheese, and a savoury brown gravy.
It’s an indulgent dish that requires a waiting time of 15–20 minutes, and you can even opt for your shoestring fries to be topped with nacho cheese and mayo, because why not?
One of the stall’s specialities is the Chicken Ragout (S$9.90), a savoury French stew served with crusty bread and salad. It’s hearty and comforting — perfect on a rainy day.
You really won’t go wrong with the pocket-friendly Western food here. In fact, I might just head over to Toa Payoh for lunch.
