But, if you’re like me and wanna try something aside from the usual picks, this place is definitely worth checking out. 

Established in 2005, MiX.STORE is a popular flagship outlet from Malaysia carrying over 600 international treats and trendy snacks from all over the world. Think products from China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan that you can’t find in typical supermarkets. 

Well, good news because you don’t have to travel all the way to JB just to get your hands on your favourite Asian snack any longer. They have officially made their debut in Singapore in Changi City Point Mall and Sengkang Grand Mall — boy, you easties sure are lucky. 

Prices for snacks start from just S$0.40, which is super affordable considering that these snacks can be hard to find in Singapore. Think Thai snacks, including the likes of Full Fish, V Food’s Biscuit Sticks and Taokaenoi’s Big Sheet Seaweed. Afterwards, quench your thirst with the popular Unif Juice in refreshing flavours like mixed berries and beetroot.

Alternatively, there are classic Korean snacks like Nongshim’s Onion Rings (S$2.50), Honey Butter Chips (S$2.50), and the cult favourite Banana Milk (S$1.40) as well (and cup noodles, of course).

Any fans of Crayon Shin-chan here?

Well, you’re in luck because they have Shin-chan-themed biscuits, snacks, and candies from S$1.50. Not to mention, there are plenty of themed drinks like Pororo, Sailor Moon, Doraemon, and Sanrio to wash it down with.

One of my favourite snacks has to be munching on Lay’s (S$1.80) Chips, anyone else? 

Well, they sell all sorts of interesting flavours that I hardly see in local supermarkets. If you’re someone who prefers rich and intense flavours, go for the Garlic Oyster or Numb and Spicy Hot Pot. 

But, if you prefer something light and still wanna satisfy those chips cravings, Lime and Cucumber sound equally good too.

For those who aren’t huge snackers, worry not. 

There are many drinks to choose from including Nongfu Spring Tea (S$0.60) or Yili Yogurt drink (S$0.40) in sweet and tangy flavours like blueberry, strawberry, and cantaloupe.

With over 10 unique flavours like jujube cranberry, taro rose, and pineapple sesame, Mana Tanghulu has become increasingly popular so I’d highly suggest heading down before it sells out — nothing beats having an icy treat in this blistering heat.

Best yet, they have thoughtfully designed the space with self-checkout kiosks and a fully cashless system which makes paying so seamless and effortless.

It’s not hard to admit that the bread game in Japan is on a whole other level. 

That is why I was so excited to discover Morimori Yogashi Bakery in Everton Park selling Japanese pastries (now I can have a taste of Japan without travelling). 

Headed by a young chef who formerly worked at Marina Bay Sands and a Michelin star restaurant for three years perfecting his craft, you can expect to find a fusion of French and Japanese bread here. 

If you’re not sure where to start, get the signature Fujisawa Garlic Cheese (S$3) loaded with Japanese mayo filling and a ton of garlic for an intense garlicky flavour. 

One piece is never enough (at least for me), but luckily they offer it in various bundles such as S$6 for two pieces or S$11 for four pieces. 

Just don’t eat it before a first date if you know what I mean. 

Another crowd favourite is the Japanese Mentaiko Seaweed Cheese Bread (S$12 for 4 pcs) featuring a generous spread of cod fish roe mixed with mayo on a soft bun.

Every bite is a burst of creamy umami with a slight heat — super delicious.  

They’ve got other breads as well such as Shio Pan, Japanese Curry and Japanese Sweet Potato Bread starting from S$2. 

If you’re with company and feeling a little peckish, the Large Signature Fujisawa Garlic Bread (S$9) is more than enough to keep everyone satisfied.

Bread can get filling rather quickly but you can always try out their mini snacks instead. 

Go for the Kinako Warabi Mochi (S$13.90 for 16 pcs) or the Matcha Warabi Mochi (S$14.90 for 16 pcs). It comes coated in a nutty and earthy powder, so feel free to enjoy it with kuromitsu syrup (black sugar) for a subtle sweetness.

The perfect treat if you enjoy food with chewy and soft textures. 

Speaking of chilled desserts, enjoy their limited edition Hokkaido Milk with Premium Mao Shan Wang Durian Puff (S$36 for 6 pcs). You can tell that they don’t skimp on ingredients here from the lava-filled durian cream.

If you consider yourself a durian connoisseur, get the Hokkaido Milk with D24 Durian Puff (S$28 for 6 pcs) which may just steal your heart.

Want something to bring home? 

The Hokkaido Milk Roll (S$15) comes in various flavours including Mango Passionfruit, Taro Yam, Matcha Yuzu Red Bean and more!

Sink your teeth into the light and fluffy sponge cake, layered with soft velvety cream. 

If you’re not going to Japan anytime soon, Morimori Yogashi Bakery is a good place to satisfy those cravings (I mean the choices that you can get are truly endless).

The festival is being held at B2 Food Hall, and only until 20 March 2023. Since the mall is no stranger to these food fairs, you can expect to find large crowds trying to snag sweet and savoury seasonal delights. 

Be sure to look out for this Soft Serve Ice Cream (S$8) from Chikiriya, which has matcha and houjicha flavours. The brand originated as a teahouse in Kyoto, so you know you’re in good hands. Whether you’re a matcha lover or a roasted houjicha fan, the soft serve promises to be smooth and creamy! 

Craving for something with more bite? iWaffle offers up the cutest little Japanese waffles (from S$4) with various fillings. These aren’t like the standard offerings you’ll find in heartland bakeries — think custard cream, strawberry cheese and more. 

Mochi lovers, this one’s for you. Popular dessert store Maruamami will also make an appearance with their Mochi Obanyaki Pancake (from S$4), which are oh-so-soft and chewy with generous amounts of fillings. If that’s not enough to convince you, perhaps the snaking queues that form from the stall might.

I don’t know about you, but I often find myself craving sake when indulging in Japanese fare. However, I don’t necessarily want to open a huge bottle of it every time — if you can relate, you’ll be delighted to know that the festival even has a stall selling glass cups of sake (S$15)!

You’ll also find other pre-packaged delights like Kyoto Candy (S$8), Castella Sponge Cake (S$24) and even a Lip Honey Lab (S$14) portable honey lip balm that you can eat.

These stalls are here for a limited time only, so be sure to head down to get your fill of these Japanese goodies!

But here’s some good news for those having Tokyo Banana withdrawals. Isetan has recently decided to bring in the delicious snacks into Singapore at S$9.90 for a box of 4.

It’s available both in-store at their Scotts Road outlet and through their website.

(Edit: The bad news is that they sold out in 2 days, even with a limit of 2 boxes per person. But Isetan is looking to bring more Tokyo Bananas into Singapore ASAP, so watch their social media if you want to score a box.)

For peeps who’ve never had the classic snacks, Tokyo Bananas are soft sponge cakes moulded into a banana shape and filled with banana cream custard.

What makes them so addictive is the strong banana flavour from the cream, which contains actual banana paste and not just flavouring.

These Tokyo Bananas sold in Singapore are frozen to ensure that they stay fresh, even after a long plane ride from Japan.

With the banana custard made to withstand cold thawing, you don’t have to worry about the custard losing its flavour or smoothness.

Best of all, you don’t have to eat them all at one go after defrosting. Isetan just recommends consuming them within 7 days.

Does this mean other versions of the Tokyo Banana might make their way to Singapore in the future? Fingers crossed for the recently released Pokemon-themed cakes — the Pikachu one is absolutely adorable.

Ultimately, while the pandemic has impacted our lives in many ways, it’s nice to see places spurred to bring in some of the food we miss from other countries.

Personally, we’re just glad that we can finally munch on some Tokyo Bananas after being stuck in Singapore for so long.
