If you’re an avid TikTok user, chances are that you’re seen videos of the viral mochi gelato all over your FYP (For You Page).
Popularised by Ice Kirin Bar, a tea-inspired gelato speciality joint in Sydney, Australia, daifuku (mochi) gelato is made by wrapping soft and chewy mochi skin around a scoop of gelato.
We knew it would happen sooner or later — the icy treat has finally made its way to our shores at Vanda Botanical Desserts, a gelato shop with outlets in 313@somerset and Takashimaya.
Vanda specialises in housemade botanical gelato inspired by the flowers, teas and herbs of Asia. Flavours include the likes of Yogurt Raspberry, Chrysanthemum Goji Berries, Poached Pear Walnut, and Oolong, just to name a few.
Each single scoop is priced at S$3.90, with an additional S$1 for Premium flavours. Simply top up S$1.50 for your gelato to be blanketed in delicate Mochi Skin, and you have yourself a unique Japan-inspired treat!
We opted for three different flavours of mochi gelato: Black Sesame, Sencha (a type of Japanese green tea), and Bacio (Dark Chocolate Hazelnut), all of which amounted to S$5.40 each.
During our attempt to find a spot with natural light, our mochi gelato started melting really, really quickly, so we highly encourage you to enjoy your mochi gelato on the spot!
I enjoyed the bittersweet Sencha the most, but seriously, what’s not to like about the conbination of chewy mochi skin and silky gelato? It’s a match made in dessert heaven.
