This speciality coffee shop in Joo Chiat serves up seasonal aesthetic cocktail-inspired concoctions so unique they’re not found elsewhere in Singapore

It’ll not be bold of me to assume that you’re a coffeeholic. I mean, can you blame me when it seems everyone is addicted to a good brew just to get by the day?

This supposed addiction has led most of us to be rather picky when it comes to our cups of joe. It can come in the form of having a go-to coffee shop that you can count on or staying up to date with the latest coffee trends.

If you resonate with the latter, you’re in for a treat as this speciality coffee bar in Joo Chiat is now the talk of the town on social media.

I find the word ‘bar’ a better description as Big Short Coffee not only serves up cocktail-inspired coffee beverages (no alcohol involved, promise!), but also presents them cocktail-style.

Yes, your coffee is ‘shaken’ and prepared right in front of your eyes. Your drink will even be accompanied by a tasting note.

Let me be the first to tell you that you won’t ever be bored of the coffee selection here. The reason? The menu changes each season.

Since it’s currently summer (ok, I know Singapore is always hot but that’s beside the point), the drinks served are light and refreshing.

For example, the Bus Uncle (S$8) is a visual delight with its colourful layers of osmanthus tea, watermelon juice and coastal wildflower rare honey stacked atop each other.

That’s not all though, as ginger bubbles and pink peppercorn add a finishing touch.

For something tangier, the Happy Valley Punch (S$8.50) may look like a normal iced americano but it’s far from it. With coconut water and blood orange juice as the base, the drink is mixed with clarified milk to make one deceiving latte.

Clarifying milk essentially turns the milk into a clear solution. Taste-wise, it does not possess the grittiness of regular milk, allowing it to deliver a smoother and more balanced mouthfeel.

Other drinks you’ve to try are the Mont Blanc (S$8) and Young Harry (S$8).

The former features a cold brew heavily topped with vanilla cream and a fine dusting of nutmeg, while the latter pairs coffee with jasmine tea and coconut. A thick layer of pistachio foam sits on top.

Find these coffee creations too wild? Go for the Espresso (S$4.5), Black (S$5) or Latte (S$6) instead, all crafted from their very own Big Short Coffee blend of Brazilian and Colombian beans.

I obviously have no issue with their servings but if I’ve to gripe about something, it’ll be the limited dine-in space. It’s cosy for sure but as I can foresee this place being packed to the brim — that means I gotta fight for seats.

Nonetheless, I’m making a trip down this weekend!

Will you be doing the same?
