Singapore’s first-ever standing coffee bar has opened in Joo Chiat, serving up great coffee and a weekly food menu featuring bakes like banana-walnut date tea cake, chelsea bun and more

by Sheree Chua

For this cafe feature, we’re back in Joo Chiat once again. Before you roll your eyes, hear me out — this one’s different! It’s a spot designed to get you on your feet instead of sitting down while you indulge in their sweet treats.

Cata Coffee has been around for some time but it was only a month ago that they opened the doors to their first physical space — and it’s stunning. The cafe features sleek steel counters surrounded by cosy wooden accents, greenery, and warm lighting that creates an inviting atmosphere.

While it’s all standing here (being Singapore‘s first standing coffee bar!), the cafe looks so welcoming that I can already picture myself cosying up with a cup of coffee as I take shelter from a downpour when I’ve forgotten my umbrella.

As their name suggests, Cata Coffee is known for serving a fine cup of brew that’ll impress even the most serious of coffee aficionados. That’s because the team is particularly passionate about sourcing and roasting the best beans around the world.

In the menu, you’ll find a range of filter coffees, including Ayla Bombe Washed (S$8) from Ethiopia and El Calagual (S$10) from Guatemala. The former possesses notes of green grape, white peach, and lemon-lime, whereas the latter is of blood plum, raspberry, and dark chocolate.

If you’re like me and tend to have your coffee white, their Latte (S$5.50) is crafted using Rwanda’s Andre Hakizimana, which has a flavour profile consisting of red bourbon, pink lady apple, mandarin, and lime.

This particular roast is used for their Cortado (S$5), Cappuccino (S$5.50), and Mocha (S$6.50) options as well.

However, for non-coffee drinkers, you won’t feel left out as their Matcha Latte (S$6.50) and Hot Chocolate (S$6.50) are sure to pair well with their sweet treats too.

When it comes to food served at Cata Coffee, you can look forward to a rotating menu each week (the perfect reason to come down weekly!). Some baked goodies offered in the past include Chelsea Bun (S$4), Country Loaf (S$6), and Sesame Rolls (S$4).

I also spotted the Banana-Walnut Date Tea Cake (S$5) and Rye-Chocolate Prune Tea Cake (S$5) for a way sweeter alternative.

Since Cata Coffee has set up their home in the bustling Joo Chiat area, they face plenty of strong competition. But with coffee this good, they’re sure to draw a crowd!
