Searching for the perfect place to unwind after a long day? How does chilling in a cool ice cave with some refreshing alcohol and savoury appetisers sound like to you? If it sounds like your thing, then it’s time to pay a visit to Deep Bistro in Johor Bahru.

Although Deep Bistro is located in Taman Pelangi — just a 11 minute drive away from the Johor Bahru checkpoint — you’ll find yourself in a snowy wonderland the moment you step through the doors.

A quick adjustment of the lighting and intensity is all it takes for you to be whisked away to a galaxy with bright stars dotting the sky, or bring you on an underwater journey into the deep blue seas. A large aquarium in the cafe with colourful little fishes that glow under the fluorescent lights further adds to the magical atmosphere.

Enjoy live music from performing bands on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9pm as you drink to your heart’s content. If you’re feeling up for it, you can also go up on stage to perform a song or two.

The bistro operates late into the night till 1am, so you can take your time to imbibe Deep Bistro’s beers, cocktails, mocktails and more.

Check out their Sakura Dome, an elegant pink cocktail with pomegranate and romantic rose petals. Their Posoni Apple is also a fan favourite, as well as a flashy Flaming Lamborghini that will warm you right up with its heat. If you’re having trouble deciding what to get, why not try out their Deep Desini? It’s a drink that is crafted according to what the bartender is feeling up to that day.

Alcohol pairs best with appetisers and hearty mains, and you’ll find no lack of it at Deep Bistro. Every one of their dishes, most of them seafood-centric, are exquisitely plated according to an underwater theme.

I love me some fried finger food with alcohol, and Deep Bistro does not disappoint with a range of deep fried side dishes from willow leaf fishes to chicken and croquettes stuffed with potatoes, cheese and crab (from S$3.75, RM12.99).

Alternatively, you could go for their healthier grilled fishes like the Grilled Salmon with Cod Fish Sauce (S$11.25, RM38.99) or Yellowtail Cheek with Salt (S$8.65, RM29.99). If you’re still feeling peckish, they’ve got mains like Oyster Risotto (S$9.51, RM32.99), Salmon Rice Bowl (S$11.25, RM38.99) and more for you to munch on.

The Steamed Egg custard (S$2.59, RM8.99) looks more like an artwork than a dish. An egg is cracked open, filled with  mushrooms, prawns and crab sticks, and then gently placed atop a beautifully crafted “bird nest”.

If you’re heading to Johor Bahru on a late-night trip with your friends, you’ll know where to go to hang out and chill!
