Let’s rewind to 2021 when TikTok became our ultimate boredom buster. Suddenly, a retro American diner-themed restaurant blew up on everyone’s FYP and it wasn’t long before crowds flocked there for the perfect photo op.
That restaurant is Joji’s Diner and they’ve launched a new sister concept (it’s 24/7 too!) called Joji’s Sandwich Parlour that’s located just a few blocks away in Serangoon. As the name suggests, the restaurant specialises in American-style sandwiches. But they also differ in terms of interior.
Joji’s Sandwich Parlour keeps their retro vibe but this time spots a camping theme — complete with wooden picnic tables and chipboard wallpaper for that cosy, outdoor feel. Walls are decorated with old-school vintage posters, skateboards, and neon signages.
As mentioned earlier, sandwiches are the main attention here. There are nine sandwiches to choose from, including the must-get Classic Reuben (S$24). Black Angus brisket is brined for 14 days, smoked over hickory wood and then marinated in a combination of Russian dressing, Swiss cheese, mustard, and sauerkraut.
Complete your dish by choosing between sourdough or focaccia. It’s a tough choice, but either way, you won’t go wrong.
Another sandwich you shouldn’t miss is Joji’s Grilled Chicken Sandwich (S$16) — with tender chicken coated with their in-house guacamole.
All sandwiches come with the option to add two sides, like grilled corn kernels, pasta salad, crispy rosti (potato hash), or mushrooms, to name a few.
If sandwiches aren’t really your thing, don’t worry as the menu features classic American mains as well. There’s the St. Louis Baby Back Ribs (S$22) that was brined for four days to ensure it’s melt-in-your-mouth tender.
Then there’s Joji’s Lasagna (S$18), a house signature that might raise a few Italian eyebrows. This unique twist comes with a crispy breaded exterior, smothered in homemade demi-glace and arugula.
Accompany these mains with sides like Fresh Calamari (S$14), Fried Okra (S$12), and Tiger Prawns (S$14) which all come with their individual sauces. Fun fact: all seafood is freshly sourced from Jurong Port.
While American diners aren’t exactly known for their cup of brew, Joji’s Sandwich Parlour breaks the mould by serving up quality coffee, with beans roasted by the experts over at Stranger’s Reunion.
Get yourself a Dirty Matcha (S$6.90) that has been receiving praise online. If you’re more of a purist, a classic cup of coffee starts at S$4.50.
However, due to how heavy the dishes can be, I’ll probably get the Yuzu and Matcha Soda (S$6.90) instead. It’s fizzy, light, and refreshingly zesty — perfect for cutting through all that richness!
