Cai fan (economical rice) is a staple for many Singaporeans. But what about Thai-style cai fan? You can find all that and more at Mak Nom Nom, a hidden spot in Tanjong Pagar.
Located in International Plaza, home to hidden gems aplenty (like this Korean street food joint), this casual Thai eatery boasts an enticing selection of Thai cuisine in the same style as economical/mixed vegetable rice stalls.
Aside from the usual suspects like stir-fried kangkong and fried eggs, you can find a variety of both classic and unconventional dishes like Moo Ping, Thai Basil Minced Pork, Thai Green Curry, and Nam Prik Ong (a Northern Thai pork dish).
Can’t get enough of the fried sesame chicken and prawn cakes sold at Chatuchak Market? They’re sold here, so go crazy!
A la carte dishes like Tom Yum Fried Rice, Pad Thai, and Thai Pig Trotter with Salted Vegetable Rice are also available, with specials that change on an almost-daily basis, great for those who can’t be bothered to pick and choose (AKA me most of the time).
Don’t sleep on the traditional handmade Thai desserts, which are available till 4.30pm, including the likes of Nonya Kueh, Khanom Tako (Thai pudding) and Khanom Luk Chup (fruit-shaped mung bean desserts).
You can also find fried sweet potato balls, also known as khanom khai nok krata, a popular Thai street snack I’d treat myself to any day.
Mak Nom Nom also holds regular pop-up kiosks peddling desserts, fresh Thai salads, and many more at different malls all around Singapore, so keep your eyes peeled!
Is it time to switch up your usual cai fan lunch routine and give the delectable Thai dishes here a try? I do think so.
