Tampines West may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think about French pastries, but One18 Bakery is here to change that.

Located under a HDB block, the Muslim-owned bakery has become a go-to for artisanal bakes at affordable prices, even amongst those who don’t live in the area.

Most tend to go for the crisp and flaky bi-coloured Plain Croissants (S$2.50, minimum order of two), all freshly baked with 100% French butter. Wallet-friendly and easy on the eye — what’s not to like?

Alternatively, go for the Supremes (from S$7 for two), the bakery’s take on the once-viral circular croissants popularised by Lafayette Bakery in New York.

There are tons of flavours to choose from, like Crunchy Kit Kat (from S$4.50) and Choc Ganache (from S$4.50), but I’d go for the popular Pistachio Supreme (S$5.50), which comes filled with a sweet and nutty pistachio cream, if I were you. Yum.

However, the sweets don’t always have to steal the show, especially when you’ve got savoury croissants in locally-inspired flavours like Beef Rendang (from S$5), Sambal Tumis Ikan Billis (from S$5), and Fried Chicken Satay (from S$5). I’d happily go for them over regular sandwiches any day.

You can also find assorted Danish Pastries (S$4.50); Cheesecake (from S$7) in flavours like Nutella, Oreo, and Apple Crumble; and ooey gooey Cinnamon Rolls (S$4.50).

If you’re seeking something even more traditional, the crowd favourite Ondeh Ondeh Rolls (S$8), comprising pandan sponge with a gula melaka filling (the cream and bits of sugar for texture), topped with coconut flakes, is your best bet.

Although tucked away in a slightly ulu area, One18 boasts an impressive selection of bakes that won’t break the bank — like those S$2.50 croissants — that may just be worth travelling for.
