Try these addictive cheese-stuffed Indonesian Dutch rissoles from a tiny patisserie near Bugis

by Christabel Tan

I enjoy sussing out hidden gems, and contrary to popular belief, many of them can be found around the Bugis area. Upon hearing about the signature rissoles from Beccarino Patisserie, I was intrigued. What are rissoles? I wanted to get my hands on them ASAP.

There are plenty of cake shops and patisseries along North Bridge Road, and this one, in particular, doesn’t stand out. I’ve probably walked past Beccarino Patisserie’s storefront countless times.

It’s a relatively small space with a few seats and a faux display of their other offerings — roll cakes, choux pastries, and Veva Cake, their spin on the Dutch-Indonesian surabaya lapis layered cake. They’ve been doling out classic cakes and muffins since 2005, making them an OG in my eyes. Why did I only find out about them now?

But of course, it’s the rissoles I’m here for — what exactly are they? A rissole is an Indonesian Dutch snack with sweet or savoury fillings that are enclosed in pastry, coated in breadcrumbs, and baked or deep-fried. Most versions contain chicken and/or vegetables bound together by a bechamel sauce.

We bought the more sinful-sounding Chicken Mushroom with Mozzarella Cheese (S$3), waited for a good 10 minutes (that’s when you know it’s prepared to order), and ate them immediately outside the shop.

It tasted like a chicken pie with a cheesy, creamy, and utterly comforting filling. The skin was almost mochi-like in texture, with a crisp exterior that’s at its best fresh out of the oven. Yum. There’s also the regular Chicken (S$2.50) rissole, but if you’re all about that ooey-gooey goodness, that simply won’t do.

Given that all rissoles are handmade by the small team at Beccarino Patisserie, it’s best to drop them a message via Instagram DM or Whatsapp at 8733 1968 to enquire or place your orders before heading down.
