Jurong Lake Gardens’ Japanese Garden is reopening in September with SG’s largest water lily collection, bamboo clusters, ornamental trees & more

It’s a well-known fact that no one in the right state of mind would ever turn down a trip to Japan. The country has so much to offer, from scenic nature views to bustling cityscapes — what’s not to love about Japan

But alas, finding the time (and affordable airfares) to get there is another question. So, what if we told you that instead of going to Japan, we’re bringing Japan to you? Well… sorta.

The Japanese Gardens at Jurong Lake Gardens is finally reopening after five years of reconstruction. The garden will officially be reopened to the public in September 2024 and will feature a series of flora and fauna sourced all the way from the United States, Britain, France and Thailand

Time to get your picnic mats and baskets ready as we reckon this will make for a pretty cool picnic spot!

The rejuvenated Japanese Garden will also be home to the largest Water Lily collection featuring over 150 day-and night-blooming water lilies sourced from all around the world — I never knew there were so many varieties of water lilies.

You’ll wanna keep your eyes peeled as you meander through the garden as there will be several specially curated water lilies that will be displayed in public for the first time. The water lily garden will also have a massive sheltered pavilion that boasts unobstructed views of the garden. Who knows, you might even be able to catch a stunning view of the sunset here too.

There’s also boardwalks that meander through the water lily garden, so you can get up close to these beauties!

Clock in your steps as you explore further into The Japanese Garden and into this section called The Sunken Garden — sounds ominous but don’t worry, it’s completely harmless.

The Sunken Garden will feature a majestic centrepiece that looks like a sinkhole with an air well to allow natural light to pass through, as well as a pool (not for swimming) to harvest recycled rainwater.

The garden is lined with vertical green walls with epiphytes (a type of moss) and trickling water. This also serves as a cooling respite for visitors to cool down and take a nice break before continuing on with their exploration.

The Japanese Garden will also have a new Floral Garden which features four thematic “mini” gardens and community plots.

The designs for the thematic gardens draw inspiration from Japanese Garden elements like bamboo clusters, ornamental trees, rock sculptures and more. Remember when we said that you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to Japan? While it might not exactly feel like Japan, at least it’ll look like it!

There’ll also be other cool and exotic plants for you to spot along the way like the wild tamarind tree, which resembles the weeping willow.

The Japanese Garden will form part of the 90-hectare Jurong Lake Gardens together with the Chinese Garden and Lakeside Garden, giving you access to even more amenities like the skate park and bouldering wall.

There’s even a Starbucks and a cafe located within the garden for you to refuel! Westies, consider yourselves blessed.

In need of some fresh air and clarity? Head down to the Japanese Garden to get into zen mode!
