One of Old Airport Road Food Centre’s most famous stalls, Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee, has opened a second outlet on Balestier Road. The legendary Lor Mee stall is touted as one of the best hawker stalls in Singapore and draws infamously long queues that can take up to an hour.
It’s been operating out of Old Airport Road for more than 4 decades, and this marks their first expansion outside of their home turf. That said, there is a similar Lor Mee stall found in Tampines that’s run by siblings of the owner.
If you were a fan of Xin Mei Xiang’s Lor Mee but can’t bear the heat of the hawker centre, the Balestier out will be fully air-conditioned. Well, at least you can queue in air-con now since the queues have already started forming at this new outlet, too.
The new outlet’s menu will remain the same, but they have plans to play around with recipes to come up with items exclusive to the Balestier branch.
Compared to the original prices at the OG Xin Mei Xiang which go for S$4/5/6, a regular-sized bowl of Lor Mee at Balestier is priced at S$6. Large ($8) and Premium ($10) are also available if the regular isn’t enough.
Each bowl of Lor Mee (S$6/8/10) comes with hard-boiled eggs, soft pan-fried red snapper, refreshing beansprouts and a spicy medley of chopped chilli and sambal.
But of course, with any Lor Mee, the sauce is the most important thing. If there’s a reason you should head down to Balestier, it’s for Xin Mei Xiang’s braise sauce — not only thick and velvety but also wonderfully balanced, not too starchy or too overwhelming.
They managef to find the right balance between braise umami, vinegar twang, and a light kiss of heat, which is something not many places manage to do. Not gonna lie, I lick up every single drop of the sauce whenever I find the time to queue for their Lor Mee.
Besides the great sauce, their obviously unique selling point is their medley of ingredients which differ from other stalls. Instead of fried goodies galore, it’s loaded with chunks of that tender fish that easily break apart in your mouth without being too greasy.
So if you’re not a fan of the heavier style of Lor Mee, Xin Mei Xiang’s might just have the perfectly balanced profile to convert you into a Lor Mee fan.
