Every foodie in Singapore would have heard of Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee at Old Airport Road. Some say it’s the best Lor Mee, some say it’s not worth the queue. Regardless, Easties would be happy to hear of the new Airport Road Zheng Zong Lor Mee.
While Xin Mei Xiang is located more centrally at Dakota, Old Airport Road Zheng Zong Lor Mee is found at Tampines. It’s a good alternative easily accessible for those living at the extreme end of Eastern Singapore.
For those who haven’t been to Old Airport Road to try Xin Mei Xiang — the waiting time sometimes stretches on for more than an hour. It’s that popular.
What’s special about Xin Mei Xiang is the ingredients they use in their Lor Mee. Xin Mei Xiang’s version is iconic for its flaked pan-fried fish, quite different from familiar bowls of Lor Mee loaded with fried goodies.
Essentially, Old Airport Road Zheng Zong Lor Mee (S$4/5/S$6) uses the same recipe. It’s opened by two sisters from the famous stall, after all. However, it’s not a branch but a separate entity.
If you’re allergic to queueing but still want a top-notch bowl of Lor Mee — Old Airport Road Zheng Zong Lor Mee is your best chance.
The queue at this Tampines stall is significantly shorter and you don’t have to wait an entire hour for your lunch. However be warned, they might still sell out early sometimes.
This bowl of Lor Mee has the same generous serving of pan-fried fish flakes peeking out through the deep-brown braise sauce. Then an accompaniment of vinegar, chili, and ginger completes the dish.
Alternatively, you can get a bowl of their dried Prawn Mee (S$4/5/6) if you’re not looking for something as heavy as Lor Mee.
If you want, you can even skip the queue. For takeaway orders above $20, you can whatsapp 9712 6849 to order at least 1 hour in advance. They will send you payment details for their paynow or paylah to confirm your order.
