Shop & dine at Johor Bahru’s first camping-themed convenience store in City Square with over 2000 imported snacks, beverages and ice creams, a blind box hunt & more

by Sheree Chua

There are many convenience store chains in JB but one that clearly stands out is Avery-Day.

Aside from carrying imported goods that’s hard to find elsewhere, Avery-Day is known for boasting unique and IG-worthy interior designs. Its first outlet located across KSL City Mall is Santorini-themed while the second at Nusa Bestari transports shoppers to the Sahara desert.

It has recently opened another outlet, this time at Johor Bahru City Square, making it incredibly convenient (no pun intended) for us Singaporean folks travelling in via CIQ.

This store is decorated camping-style — the first in JB — fitted with camping chairs and tables. You can even hang out in an actual tent for a more “realistic” camping experience. Well, as realistic as one can get in a shopping mall, that is.

Before you take a seat, browse through its wide selection of over 2000 imported products, ranging from snacks, hot foods and instant noodles to beers and other beverages from countries such as Japan, Korea, Thailand, Taiwan and China.

I especially recommend checking out the ice cream offerings, which may put proper ice cream parlours to shame with the sheer variety of products available. From the smoothie-textured Lotte Soh to the refreshing Futaba Lemon Milk Ice Bar, there’s something for everyone.

What’s more, this convenience store doesn’t only serve food and drinks. A section of the store is dedicated to a blind box hunt, no doubt delighting anime lovers. Here, you’ll be able to browse shelves upon shelves of Gundam assembly models, GK figurines, blind boxes from Sanrio, Zombie Party and more.

Let’s say you have a sudden craving for freshly brewed coffee and/or pastries. Not to worry as one of the OG cafes in JB, Faculty of Caffeine is situated in the store, having re-emerged after closing its doors at Jalan Trus in 2021.

Occasionally, you may even be greeted with the sight of the pastry chef baking croissants. Yes, that’s how fresh the pastries are.

I’m going to let you in on a little insider tip: there are discounts and free lifelong memberships up for grabs. They are in limited quantities, of course, so it’s okay to be kiasu and hurry down to the store. Who knows? You might just be lucky.

Will Avery-Day City Square be on your list for your next JB trip?
