Ramen lover or not, you’ve probably heard of those Korean-inspired self-service ramen joints that have popped up all over the world (like Koramie in Johor Bahru).
It’s been a long time coming, but one such concept has finally opened on our shores.
Enter Slurp Mee, Singapore’s first self-service instant noodle cafe, located along Tessensohn Road — it’s about an eight-minute walk from Farrer Park MRT station.
The 24-seater cafe, which occupies the unit next to popular cafe Hey Slow Joe, is clean and spacious, though you may have some trouble finding a seat during peak hours.
Grab a basket and start browsing through the walls lined with over 70 varieties of noodles from Korea, Japan, China, Indonesia, Thailand, and of course, Singapore — all in packet form.
I obviously had to make a beeline for my two favourite brands: Ottogi Jin Ramen and Samyang Buldak AKA fire noodles.
Keep an eye out for coloured stickers indicating the price of each type of instant noodles. For instance, packets with a yellow sticker are priced at S$3.50 (a la carte), while those with a red sticker cost S$5.50 (a la carte).
After choosing your ramen, head over to the selection of individually wrapped toppings (from S$0.80), all of which do not contain any pork or lard.
Think staples like Fish Dumplings (S$0.80), Cheese Meatball (S$0.80), and Cheese Tofu (S$0.80), alongside more premium options like Prawn Paste (S$1.20), Abalone (S$1.80), Smoked Duck (S$2.30), and Onsen Egg (S$2.80).
To make things even more value for money, we recommend going for the Sets, consisting of your choice of noodles and three toppings with a Pepsi, and forking out an additional S$0.50 for a Korean pouch drink (U.P. S$3.20).
You can choose from the likes of Omijia Ade, Green Grape Ade or even a Hazelnut Americano (if only they also had banana milk!).
The noodle sets are priced as follows:
- Classic (yellow sticker): S$7.90
- Deluxe (blue sticker): S$8.90
- Premium (red sticker): S$9.90
Payment can be made at the cashier, where you’ll receive a tray with cutlery, a paper bowl, and ice cups.
Afterwards, simply head over to one of the ramen-cooking machines, which are super easy to operate. So, regardless of whether you’re making Dry Noodles, Normal Noodles, or Thick Noodles, you’ll be able to whip up a feast in no time at all!
But of course, feel free to check with the friendly staff if you have any questions.
You can also find condiments like fried shallots, chilli padi, and soy sauce to further spruce up your noods.
When you’re done, grab a seat, and Slurp your Mee to your heart’s desire.
At the time of writing, the cafe is only open till 9pm (and 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays), so fingers crossed they’ll be able to open 24 hours in time to come!
