Anyone familiar with the Joo Chiat area will recognise Braseiro, a casual French-inspired steakhouse specialising in steak frites, or “steak and fries” in French.
But if you’re not an Eastie or have never ventured beyond the main Katong stretch, this is all you need to know about the popular establishment that has been open since 2015.

Although you may be tempted to go for the a la carte menu, we highly recommend heading straight for the more value-for-money Combo Duo (S$84.90++) for 2 pax, consisting of an appetiser, two mains, and a dessert.

You can start off with the Tomates & burrata or graze on a charcuterie platter (Planche Apéro), but my dining partner and I instantly gravitated towards the Camembert rôti (U.P. S$25.90) — crusty French baguette slices served with ooey gooey melted French camembert cheese for dipping.

The Entrecôte (U.P. S$24.90), flame-grilled 200g ribeye steak, may be a no-brainer for most, but it probably won’t sit well with steak aficionados (let alone those who really know their stuff).

It was well-seasoned and succulent, with the right doneness, but otherwise just very average-tasting. I generally prefer thicker cuts of steak with a lil’ more marbling, so perhaps an upsize (+S$8 for 300g, +S$15 for 400g) would’ve been ideal.
Still, this is definitely one of the more wallet-friendly steak options around, so give it a go if you’re not fussy!

I was way more impressed by the Côte de porc (U.P. S$35.90), which requires an S$11 top-up, and for good reason.

Seriously, don’t sleep on this flame-grilled Spanish bone-in pork chop, which boasts juicy meat and a thick ribbon of crispy-edged fat — the ultra-decadent kind that left me swooning.
It’s best enjoyed hot, and with the accompanying mustard.

All mains come with free-flow salad, crisp and fresh with a tangy dressing (for balance), but we all know what we’re really here for.

Enter the wickedly addictive fries, the real star of the show.
Braseiro may not serve the best steak in the East, but boy are their housemade fries good. They’re hand-cut, with a bit of the skin left on — just how I like it — and served in baskets alongside a rich and aromatic truffle mayo I’d gladly buy jars of.
And of course, the fries are free-flow, so you can (attempt to) polish off as many baskets as your heart desires.

As for dessert, we opted for the Dessert du jour maison (dessert of the day), which turned out to be a luscious crème brûlée.

The next time cravings come your way, why not bring your date or bestie here for an evening of free-flow fries?
