Got a hankering for fatty roasted meat? You can now have your char siew and eat it too at Char Seal Bar, a speciality bar & restaurant in Clarke Quay.

Formerly a home-based business that went viral for its Valentine’s Day char siew flower bouquets, Char Seal Bar now occupies a vibrant, pastel-hued space in Havelock 2. It’s reminiscent of an ice cream parlour or arcade, decorated with neon signs spelling out the restaurant’s signature house sauces — Original, Truffle, Mala, Yuzu, Garlic, and Wasabi.

There’s even craft beer on tap, and a selection of fun, modern dishes that take their signature KL-style char siew to a whole new level.

Unlike Singapore-style char siew, the KL version is dark and extra charred, prepared using premium cuts of Spanish Duroc pork belly with exquisite layers of creamy fat. Enjoy the rich, tender, and naturally sweet meat in its unadulterated form (a plate of regular Char Siew with Original sauce is priced at S$25 for 300g, with every additional 100g at S$8.90), or with a medley of creative carbs.

Who knew char siew would taste so darn good alongside eggs, sauteed mushrooms, tomato, mixed salad, steamed mantou in the All-Day-Breakfast (S$24), or even atop a mountain of (free-flow) fries in the Char Siew Steak (S$17.90 for Ladies Cut, S$27.90 for Carnivore)?

For a tried-and-tested combi, choose between the short grain rice-based Char Seal Don (S$12.90) and Char Seal Special Noodle (S$13.90), which features chewy indomie noodles. Both come with char siew, fried broccoli, and an onsen egg (the latter even has the added bonus of crispy pork lard — yum).

Load up on the pork even more with buckets of crispy Pork Rind (S$5.90) and Char Seal Fries (S$14.90), truffle shoestring fries layered with shredded parmesan cheese and char siew.

Those who consider themselves connoisseurs of char siew and craft beers can try out the Unique Char Seal Pairing Experience (S$39), a flight of six alcoholic beverages paired with char siew dipped in the different house sauces. Expect tasty tipples like sangria, sake, and even sparkling yuzu wine.

It’s top quality char siew at its finest — what’s not to like?
