Flame & Fern is an industrial open-concept cafe serving rosti, loaded bagels & flame-grilled meats overlooking scenic views in Johor Bahru

We’re all about discovering new cafes in JB, because it’s always nice to spice things up instead of visiting the same old places every time.

One of the latest kids on the block is Flame & Fern Cafe in Taman Melodies.

Located just a 15-minute drive from the checkpoint, the industrial-style cafe boasts high ceilings, gorgeous natural light, and loft-like interiors with both indoor and alfresco seating.

Head for one of the indoor seats if you’d like to watch the chefs at work in the open-concept kitchen — they’ve got an impressive grill concept that ought to delight those who enjoy smoky flame-kissed meats!

Otherwise, head on over to the breezy alfresco area overlooking a rustic backyard (and garden of sorts) if you’d rather spend the afternoon admiring the lush greenery and pretending like you’re on vacation.

Naturally, there are also plenty of photo spots around the cafe, so go crazy.

As for the food, you can look forward to hearty brunch classics, all of which are prepared from scratch.

Go for the signature Homemade Beef Bacon & Egg (S$11.91, RM42), flame-grilled beef bacon and scrambled eggs on housemade brioche, which can be purchased on its own at the bakery section.

The comforting Lamb Chorizo Shakushuka (S$9.93, RM35) is another popular option, as is the Signature Waffle & Chicken Tikka (S$8.51, RM30), which sees grilled chicken tikka in place of the usual fried chicken, paired with mint yogurt coleslaw and maple syrup.

I can forsee many first-time visitors heading straight for the Rosti & Chicken Sausage (S$6.80, RM24), because it seems as though Singaporeans cannot get enough of rosti.

They’ve also got Steak & Eggs (S$18.44, RM65), Seafood Puttanesca Pasta (S$10.78, RM38), and even bagels loaded with Tempeh & Wild Mixed Mushroom (S$8.51, RM30) and BLT (S$10.21, RM36).

Those who visit in the evening can check out the newly launched dinner menu, which showcases an array of grilled meats and seafood.

Wash it all down with a selection of Milk Caps (cappuccino) in flavours like Creme Brulee (S$6.52, RM23), Strawberry Matcha (S$7.09, RM25), and Peanut Butter Coffee (RM25), or the more refreshing Pear & Lime Plum (S$5.95, RM21) and Grape Lemon Soda (S$6.25, RM23).

Don’t forget to end the meal with desserts — I’ve got my eye on both the Smoked Bailey’s Tiramisu (S$9.07, RM32) and the Grilled Lemon Loft Cake (S$4.53, RM16), a tangy loaf cake with sour cream and a berry sauce.

The best part? Flame & Fern Cafe happens to be located within walking distance to popular cafes like Keijometo, Fifty Trees, and Nimmies Pastry Cafe, so you can totally spend the entire afternoon hopping around.

Will you be adding the cafe to your to-visit list on your next JB getaway?
