Although we can never get enough of Korean cuisine, one particularly trendy dish that has been the talk of the town this year is raw marinated crabs, otherwise known as ganjang gejang (or its spicy equivalent, yangnyeom gejang).
Sure, you can find decent ganjang gejang in Singapore, but at a pretty hefty price tag. That’s not the case if you travel across the causeway to OMG Crab in Johor Bahru, though.
With outlets in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, and now, JB, the casual Korean restaurant is located just a five-minute walk from KSL City Mall, within Green Renaissance, an organic food store.
They specialise in marinated raw crabs “loved by native Koreans and Malaysians alike”, prepared using live wild-caught flower crabs with a special 26-ingredient recipe from Jeju — it sounds like the real deal, alright.
Prices for the signature Korean Soy Sauce Marinated Raw Crab, which is available in different sizes, start from around S$6.90 (RM23) for an L-size crab (110g–130g) and can go up to S$22 (RM73) for an XXXL size crab (260g-300g).
Alternatively, the Korean Spicy Marinated Raw Crab is priced at S$11.45 (RM38) for those who prefer a more fiery yet umami kick.
OMG Crab Johor also sells raw marinated Tiger Prawns (S$19/RM63) and Salmon (from S$14.47/RM48), which are best enjoyed in a set (from S$8.74/RM29), all of which are served with fish roe-topped rice, seaweed, and kimchi.
You can even find unique bibimbap options like the Yeoneo Deopbap (S$10.55/RM35), rice with salmon, cucumbers, fish roe, pickled radish, kimchi, and seaweed, topped with a raw egg yolk — it’s both tasty and easy on the eye.
Although the restaurant is not halal-certified, it is Muslim-friendly, as it does not use any pork, lard, or alcohol (with all ingredients prepared in a pork-free environment).
The next time you hit up JB for your usual shopping, massages, or cafe-hopping afternoons, why not make a pit stop at OMG Crab for some affordable yet authentic raw seafood?
