The world’s first charcoal-grilled tonkatsu restaurant opens its first international outpost in Singapore serving up dishes like Hire Katsu Set, Berkshire Special Rosu Set, and more

Singaporeans, we’re in for a treat!

The famous Tonshou is making their grand international debut in style on our sunny shores — marking its first international expansion outside of Korea. Known as the world’s first charcoal-grilled tonkatsu from Busan, they have been stealing hearts (and stomachs) left and right. They’re so popular that their daily 300 slots are snapped up in five minutes. I would say this is a testament to their culinary skills.

If you’re planning to head down, here’s the pro tip: go early. Their Berkshire Special Rosu Katsu Set (S$37) and Special Rosu Katsu Set (S$31) are specialty cuts and charcoal-grilled, making it the star of the show which comes with a limited daily quota. Happened to miss out? Don’t worry, the rest of the menu still delivers.

Can’t decide on which cut to try? Opt for the Katsu Combo Set (S$32) — a deadly trio of Rosu, Hire, and Ebi katsu that will let you sample the best of everything. Or, looking for non-pork options? The Ebi Katsu Set (S$24) and Ebi Sando Set (S$24) are just as delightful to eat. Also, add on the Curry (S$5) to pair it with your rice and tonkatsu for that extra umami punch.

Furthermore, all items on the menu come with a set of free-flow corn soup, rice, cabbage, miso soup, as well as their homemade sauce — a delightful blend of oyster, beef, tomato, pork, wheat, and soybean.

To achieve their signature pink hue, they go through a unique four-stage cooking process. First, the process starts with low-temperature cooking, high-temperature cooking, a rest phase, and finally, a turn on the charcoal grill for that smoky, irresistible flavour that we all love.

While tonkatsu is a Japanese dish, Tonshou has managed to work their magic and made it their own, earning lots of love from the public. Although, it’s not the cheapest tonkatsu in town, the flavour and showmanship are worth every penny.

As of today, the restaurant has been fully booked. However, you can look out for booking slots on their Instagram.

Will you be trying out some charcoal-grilled tonkatsu this weekend?
