It seems Tanjong Pagar is becoming a worthy competitor to Joo Chiat when it comes to the best place in Singapore for cafe-hopping. From The Glasshouse and Fieldnotes to The Populus and The Coffee Code, there’s no shortage of cafes around the area.
Believe it or not, there’s another latest addition to the local cafe scene — this time, offering cafe-goers a more homely and minimalist abode.
butter tgt hails from the home-based bakery @youkneadcakes. If the business rings a bell, that’s because they had held pop-up stints in the past at Baker X @ Orchard Central.

Now, the bakery has their very own space to call home.
Tucked away on the second floor of a shophouse along Duxton Road, butter tgt is neatly divided into three sections: bench seating at the back, dining table and chairs in the front facing the windows, and the espresso bar and a counter for orders in the middle.

If you’re planning to stay long for brunch or have long conversations with friends, no doubt take a seat in the front, where you get to enjoy plenty of sunlight. You can even look out the window and people-watch.
Given its tranquil atmosphere, it would be a shame not to treat yourself to a solo date here. Find a comfy spot and delve into a book or type away on your laptop as you plan your next holiday.

For quick catch-ups or your daily 3pm coffee breaks, opting for the bench seating would be ideal (not to mention courteous as well).
So, what’s good here? Considering their goodies are home-baked in small quantities, I’d assume everything but let me highlight their crowd favourites.

The Sourdough with Kombu Miso Butter (S$8) is literally umami heaven that would satisfy your savoury cravings right then and there, while the Grilled Cheese Toast (S$14) is not your usual cheese toast.
Made with a combination of Gouda, Mozzarella and Cheddar cheese, the toast is uniquely accompanied by a wholemeal mustard dip on the side.

Or, if you’re like me, you would get the classic Avocado Toast (S$12).

Their pastries are what brought them to fame, so don’t leave without getting their Madeleines (three pieces for S$7.50). As these are freshly baked upon order, expect a nice golden crust on the outside and soft, buttery goodness on the inside each and every time.

You can also choose from a rotating spread of breads and cakes at the counter. Depending on when you come down, you get to indulge in their Banana Bread (S$6), Black Sesame & Soybean Crumble (S$8.50) and Lemon Chia Seed cake (S$6.80), on top of cookies and croissants.
Wash down with their range of beverages, including Iced Coconut Americano (S$7.50) and Iced Dirty Matcha (S$8).

For those overly critical of their matcha, you’ll be glad to know that the drink is made with Ajisai Matcha from Niko Neko Matcha, which features balanced notes of nuttiness and umami-ness. Meanwhile, their espresso is a butter (truly living up to their name) blend from the local-based Prodigal Roasters.
While I’m sure you’ll return for their offerings, it’s their warm hospitality and inviting atmosphere that turn customers into loyal patrons.
