Annyeong Chicken and Korean BBQ is a Korean-run stall in a coffee shop with authentic and affordable dishes like honey butter chicken, jjajang japchae rice & more

Every time I binge on the latest Korean drama, I always get a real hankering for Korean food — and no, sometimes, whipping up some instant ramyun just isn’t enough.

There might be plenty of authentic Korean restaurants in Singapore (especially around Tanjong Pagar), but they usually aren’t the most affordable and tend to be pretty crowded. Whenever I head down after a long day of work, I’d still have to wait for about half an hour before I can get a seat.

If you face the same (first world) woes as me, then you’ll be stoked to learn about this lesser-known gem that we found — Annyeong Chicken and Korean BBQ, a Korean food stall tucked away in a coffee shop in Geylang. And before you scoff, this isn’t just any ol’ Korean hawker stall — it’s actually helmed by true blue Koreans and serves up some really affordable and authentic Korean fare

Plus, the coffee shop that the stall is located in is very clean, bright and spacious — so the entire dining experience is still very comfortable and enjoyable.

Now let’s get to the important part — the food. The menu is pretty substantial, with both trusted staples and some more unique creations available.

If you’re into the good old classics for the main course — there’s items like Bibimbap (S$5.50), Kimchi Fried Rice (S$5.50), Jjajangmyeon (S$7) and more.

For the ones who want to try something that’s lesser-known and unique, there’s the Kimchi and Fish Roe Rice (S$6.50) — otherwise known as Albap.

Served with a medley of fresh and crunchy ingredients like pickled radish (danmuji), cucumber, and of course, kimchi, alongside umami crabstick and flying fish roe atop a bed of fluffy short-grained rice — this makes for the perfect meal if you’re a lover of contrasting textures.

The crisp vegetables, kimchi and pickled radish also meet the flavour of the flying fish roe and crabstick perfectly without making the meal too heavy. Trust us when we say that you’ll find your spoon gravitating back to the bowl again and again after the first bite!

Another must-try is the Japchae Bap (S$5.50) — which is essentially stir-fried glass noodles served with the same fluffy white rice.

What’s special about this is that it’s served with a little bowl of Jjajang sauce

Combined together with the uber springy and bouncy glass noodles and steaming white rice, you’ll definitely find yourself sitting in front of an empty bowl in no time.

And of course, no Korean food craving is satisfied without Korean fried chicken! This stall has it in five different flavoursOriginal (from S$13), Yangnyeom (from S$14), Soy Garlic (from S$14), Honey Butter (from S$15) and Cheese (S$15).

If you like your KFC saucy, opt for the Yangnyeom or Soy Garlic flavours as the tantalising sauces coat the crispy fried batter of the chicken really well without being too greasy and overwhelming.

If not, the Honey Butter and Cheese flavours are topped off with powdered seasoning — which adds an extra layer of flavour to the juicy fried chicken.
