If street food and Taiwanese-style desserts are up your alley, you can now have the best of both worlds without breaking the bank at Baole Desserts in Toa Payoh.

Tucked away in the Food Alley near Toa Payoh MRT Station and HDB Hub (so you can grab a celebratory snack after choosing your BTO unit, perhaps?), the humble takeaway-only kiosk dishes out some of the most unique potato pancakes in Singapore.

Each potato pancake comprises shredded potatoes, cabbage, onions, egg, and your toppings of choice — it’s kind of like a cross between rosti and Japanese okonomiyaki.

Prices start from S$5.90 for the Signature, topped with a simple combination of sweet onion, mozzarella cheese, and a sunny side egg, but you can also opt for add-ons like Spice (S$0.50), Mentaiko (S$1), and Cheese (S$1).
I’d go for either the Seafood Mentaiko (S$10.90), which is topped with prawn, squid ring, bonito flakes, and a generous drizzle of umami mentaiko sauce, or the Flaming Beef (S$9.90), because beef cubes and mozzarella cheese. Yum.

As for the desserts, you can expect the likes of beancurd, grass jelly, and aiyu jelly with assorted toppings, all of which are priced at
The Specially Mixed (S$5.20) combines all three, alongside taro balls, mini taro, black pearls, glutinous rice balls (tang yuan), and mixed jelly. Don’t forget to finish off your dessert with a sauce of your choice, like mango sago or gula melaka.

If you ever pop by Toa Payoh (or even better, live there), don’t forget to make a pitstop at Baole Desserts for wallet-friendly rosti and refreshing desserts!
