Bread Street Kitchen by Gordon Ramsay launches unique cod & chocolate wellington available for one month only

by Christabel Tan

As someone who spends way too much time watching re-runs of Hell’s Kitchen, I’ve always wanted to try the (in)famous beef wellington.

And boy am I glad I finally got to on my first visit to Bread Street Kitchen & Bar in Marina Bay Sands.

This month is a particularly exciting one, given that it is Worldwide Wellington Month, an annual occasion celebrated by all Bread Street Kitchen restaurants across the world. From now till 31 October 2023, you’ll get to enjoy The Wellington Experience (S$98++ per person), a limited-edition three-course menu encompassing an appetiser, a wellington of choice, and dessert.

There are two starters to choose from, the first being Seabass Carpaccio with silky avocado purée
and wakame powder, the lighter of the two.

As a meat lover, I had to go for the Roasted Beef Tonnato with caper berries, boiled egg, and tonnato sauce (a creamy Italian tuna sauce), which I happily mopped up with bread.

Now, on the stars of the show, the wellingtons.

Making its debut is the exquisite Black Cod Wellington — think rich, buttery, and flaky cod wrapped in a layer of buttery pastry with crispy broccolini, ikura, fragrant moilee sauce (a creamy, spiced gravy that’s kinda like a tame version of Indian curry), and an unpictured side of mashed potatoes. It’s perfect for all the non-beef eaters out there!

But if you can never resist a good slab of beef (same here), keep it classic with the iconic Beef Wellington.

Tender filet mignon cooked to a perfect medium rare encased within golden pastry served alongside creamy mashed potatoes, honey roasted carrots and red wine jus — this was as satisfying as I expected it to be.

The beef wellington is typically served in a sharing portion for two (Beef Wellington for 2, S$168), so this is a good opportunity to enjoy it as a single sliced portion.

All things considered, I recommend ordering the cod if you visit during lunch, and the beef at dinnertime, given that the latter is more likely to leave you feeling stuffed (like a wellington…)!

Dessert is a sweet, sweet affair, because you’ll get to savour the all-time favourite Sticky Toffee Pudding served with clotted cream ice cream and smoky caramel.

If you’re dining in a group (as you should), make it an extra indulgent occasion by adding on Chocolate Wellington (S$32++), a hearty pastry creation that breaks apart to reveal a waterfall of decadent dark chocolate sauce.

If that wasn’t enough, it’s also paired with house-made Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream and strawberries for a much-needed citrus-y tang. It’s practically impossible to finish this dessert wellington on your own, so order it to share, please!

Feel free to top up an additional S$48++ per person for a sommelier wine pairing option if you’re in the mood for booze.

Once again, you only have till the end of the month to enjoy this exclusive wellington menu, so make your reservations as soon as you can here.
