Here’s a tip for those in need of a new and exciting date spot: dining at Cultivate Cafe in Tanjong Pagar may make you feel as though you’ve been transported to a different era.
The restaurant is more than just a pretty face — it’s located in the space previously occupied by the now-defunct Cook & Tras Social Library in the recently refurbished Maxwell Reserve, a hotel that “elegantly embodies European grandeur infused with rich historical heritage”.
With its wooden bookshelves, arched doorways, and ornate furnishings, the quaint library setting does exude a certain charm that harks back to the days of Singapore’s colonial past.
The food served at Cultivate is all plant-based, non-GMO, gluten-free, sustainable, artisanal and organic, using ingredients specially sourced from small and family farms. Look through the menu and you’ll be greeted with a wide variety of sandwiches, starters, mains, and healthy beverages with unique flavour combinations.
Spoilt for choice? Order the addictive Crispy Fried Kale Leaves with Salted Chilli Spice (S$17) and the Satisfying (S$22), a roasted pumpkin, pesto, and vegan chive cream cheese sandwich. The Selection of Cavi-Art (S$32) is sure to spark conversation — it’s made of sustainable plant-based seaweed caviar that may just impress the pickiest of eaters.
With all the gluten-free desserts, pastries, and organic dairy-free ice cream options available, it’s no wonder that vegans can indeed have their cake and eat it too. I’ll have the Creamy Coconut Pistachio Gelato (S$16) and a Twisted Negroni (S$20), thank you very much.
If you’re in a hurry, pop by the grab-and-go counter for a quick coffee and pastry fix. Don’t miss out on the smoothies, cold-pressed juices, and kombucha either.
