You may have heard about Mad About Sucre, the restaurant and patisserie along Teo Hong Road that has been serving up French-inspired fare for a decade.
Although most tend to visit for their exquisite picture-perfect confections, there is so much more to them than just dessert.
Take this newly launched 13-course Spring Dinner Tasting Menu priced at just S$78++ per person for instance. It’s a seasonal multi-course meal that showcases premium ingredients, and for under S$100, which is really value-for-money.
Seafood lovers, in particular, will be extra satisfied, as the menu is kicked off with the restaurant’s own spin on nigiri sushi; the Salmon Aburi, which sees cured and lightly-torched salmon perched on transparent “crystal bread” (as inspired by legendary restaurant El Bulli).
It is followed by the Spiced Tuna Sashimi, a sweet, savoury, and wonderfully spiced combination of chipotle-marinated tuna on a crispy rice cake.
Those who prefer their soups on the sweeter side will delight in the Four-Hour Stew Of Vine-Ripe Tomato with Pesto, which comes with the option of an additional S$5 for Handpicked Arctic Crab Meat.
However, it was the House-made French Pate of Truffle & Chicken Liver — wonderfully earthy, with a smooth, creamy texture — that really did it for me and my dining partners. Spread on the accompanying In-house Bread alongside Whipped Butter, and go to town.
In the spirit of keeping things exciting, I won’t be sharing about every course but you can look forward to dishes like the Handpicked Crabmeat in Local-inspired Chilli Crab Sauce, paired with a crispy “pani puri” of sorts, as well as the French Baked Escargot wrapped in scallion pancake.
The meal comes to a close with two “mains”, the first being a seafood entrée. You can choose between the Grilled Wild-caught Fresh Barramundi or the Grilled Fresh Wild-caught Prawn, but I’d recommend the latter, which comes topped with umami cured egg shavings, chilli, and garlic.
Last but not least, the meat entrée lets you opt for either a French Oxtail Stew (+S$7) with a silky smooth potato mash, or the Lava Cheese Chicken Pasta, which sees a stack of chicken bolognese pasta drizzled with a thick and creamy cheese sauce. Super satisfying.
As for drinks, those looking to imbibe can enjoy 1-for-1 on tipples like Nature Sauvignon Blanc Semillon (White Organic Wine), Nature Merlot (Red Organic Wine), or even refreshing Highballs in flavours like Muscat Grapes & Tie Guan Yin, Rose & Lychee, and Sour Plum.
So, if you’ve got a date to impress, but find yourself getting cold feet, why not just let these 13 courses do all (okay, most of) the talking?
Do note that the tasting menu is only available at dinnertime, from 6.30pm to 10pm. Reservations can be made here.
