Singapore’s largest keyboard customisation store lets you build your custom keyboard from scratch in various sizes, styles, colours, materials and many more

Anyone here love the sound of keyboards going clickety clackety? If you are, welcome to the club!

I actually didn’t realise I found the sound relaxing until I stumbled upon a bunch of ASMR videos of it online. Guess who was hooked after watching just one video?

Turns out customised keyboards can not only produce those tingle-inducing sounds but also help in boosting productivity (like how cute stationeries make homework less daunting) and optimising your desk space.

As more and more people are jumping on the bandwagon of personalising their keyboards, The Laboratory by RF has emerged as a one-stop keyboard customisation shop everyone can count on.

Back then, you could only build a keyboard from scratch via their online website. Now, you can do it from their first-ever physical outlet at Cathay Cineleisure.

Singapore’s largest keyboard customisation store will officially open on 2 August 2024 (mark your calendars!), housing three stations to provide keyboard enthusiasts with the ultimate hands-on experience.

Not to worry, each station has an expert on hand, so you won’t look lost or feel out of place.

You’ll start at the first station by choosing your keyboard base. There are four sizes to settle on: 65%, 75%, 87% Tenkeyless and 100%. The last option provides a full-size layout, including all standard keys and a numeric keypad, making it perfect for those who frequently input numbers.

Afterwards, you can proceed to select your desired style and materials, such as ABS plastic, aluminium for a more premium feel, and many more.

Heading onto the second station, here’s where you get to play around with a wide selection of switches in all sorts of designs and colours. Switches come in three types: linear, tactile and clicky.

If you’re like me and enjoy the old-school sound of keyboards, opt for the clicky, which will magically ‘transform’ your modern keyboard into a typewriter. On the other hand, linear switches are quieter, while tactile physically come with bumps for a more sensorial typing experience.

You’ll end your keyboard customisation journey at the third station, where you get to pick out the keycaps you want. I would say this is the most important step as keycaps are what offer that unique appearance and feel of a keyboard.

They’ve keycaps available in various colours, shapes, and materials, ranging from work-appropriate and feminine designs for all my girlies out there to the truly outrageous that’s suited for gamers.

Once you’ve visited all three stations, all you’ve to do is wait for your keyboard to be assembled. Give it a test to make sure all’s good before bringing your baby home right on the spot.

That’s how easy peasy the whole experience is.

Which custom keyboard feature will you add to make your setup truly unique?
