Can never resist anything deep-fried or are a major tonkatsu lovers? This hidden gem in Jalan Besar is one you must check out.
Run by a Singaporean and his Japanese wife, TSUZUKU is a hawker stall in Berseh Food Centre specialising in wallet-friendly Japanese fried foods like tonkatsu, curry katsu, and croquettes.
You can choose to enjoy them either as a set meal with rice, raw cabbage salad, and Breaded Shrimp (S$7.80 for a la carte with salad), or as finger food.
The widely-ordered Tonkatsu Set (S$9.80) sees pork loin “breaded and fried the good old fashioned way”, while the heartier Curry Katsu Set (S$10.80) comes with the addition of mildly spicy Japanese curry.
if you prefer your pork a lil’ more tender, the Tenderloin Katsu Set (S$10.80), which uses tenderloin fillet in place of the regular pork loin, will be more up your alley.
One of the more unique offerings on the menu is the Minced Katsu Set (S$9.80), comprising a flavourful ground beef and pork cutlet, otherwise known as menchi katsu.
This is joined by the likes of Cheese Katsu (S$7.80 for a la carte, S$10.80 for set), which is filled with gooey, melty cheese, and the hard-to-find Ham Katsu (S$7.80 for 3pcs with salad) — a dish I started craving for after seeing it on Netflix series Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories!
Customers have also raved about the Potato Croquettes (S$5.80 for 3pcs), which are, of course, made in-house with a soft and creamy potato filling.
All items are freshly made to order, so be prepared to wait, especially during peak hour.
Will you be heading down for some comforting katsu anytime soon?
