Picnics just hit differently — fresh air, good company, and tasty bites. For the last point, I’ve got a bit of a love-hate relationship — sure, I enjoy cooking at home but carrying the food around? That’s where the hassle kicks in.
You feel me? The food gets cold, spills happen, and it’s no surprise that these issues have sparked the popularity of picnic bundles, though they still need a little planning.
If you’re in the mood for an impromptu picnic and don’t feel like prepping your own food, IPPUDO has you covered with their latest concept. Even better, it’s conveniently located at Marina Bay Sands, nearby to all the popular picnic spots.
Roll Sushi by IPPUDO is the brand’s first-ever takeaway sushi bar in the world and was designed to perfectly satisfy our craving for quick, delicious bites. Here, it’s all about their Maki (Sushi) and Tatami options, which come in a total of 16 flavours.
I had the chance to visit their outlet and tried the Samurai Spice Roll (S$17) and Edo Umami Roll (S$23) for my maki, along with the Mentaiko Spam (S$16) and Island Sunrise (S$17) for my tatami.
The Samurai Spice Roll is stuffed with salmon and shrimp, and topped with fried enoki, scallions, and chilli mayo. Despite its name, it was not at all spicy; instead, it offered a creamy richness that complemented the fresh seafood. The crunchy enoki added a satisfying texture.
Out of the two, I preferred the Edo Umami Roll, but I might be a bit biased since I’m a huge fan of unagi and avocado. The sushi is further topped with ikura and crispy cucumber, which elevate the flavour profile to a rich umami experience.
If you’re looking to skip the chopsticks, the Tatami is the perfect option. I like to think of them as “sushi sandwiches” because that’s exactly what they resemble!
The Mentaiko Spam Tatami features a classic rice roll filled with spam katsu, egg, and shredded cabbage, all drizzled with mentaiko sauce. Needless to say, it was a safe choice, boasting a flavour most people will enjoy (I mean, it’s hard to go wrong with mentaiko).
As for the Island Sunrise Tatami, a soft-boiled egg is nestled in the middle, paired with avocado puree and shiso leaves. While I would have loved a runnier yolk for added richness, I recognise that it could lead to a messy situation.
Want something more personalised? Get their customised sushi, starting at S$18 each. Start by selecting either Maki or Tatami as your base, then choose three fillings like tamago, spam, and shrimp. For an extra treat, you can upgrade to wagyu, salmon, or unagi for S$2 to S$4 more.
Complete your custom sushi by drizzling it with a sauce of your liking, such as Cheddar Cheese or Mustard Mayo, and finishing with toppings like tobiko and tempura flakes.
I also got the Japanese Soft Cream (S$6) garnished with chocolate sauce and a Mint Lychee topping (+S$1) for my dessert. You can enjoy it plain or opt for the Kaya Jam sauce, while other toppings include white chocolate, raspberry, and blueberry.
Keep in mind that it’s labelled as soft cream, not ice cream. I was expecting a classic soft serve, so I was a bit let down by the whipped cream texture and the absence of a strong vanilla flavour.
All in all, I’ve to praise IPPUDO for addressing a need that we didn’t even know we had for picnics.
