We all know Maxwell Food Centre is home to some of the most iconic and well-loved eats in Singapore (think Fuzhou oyster cake, Nyonya laksa, fish head bee hoon, the famed Hainanese chicken rice, and so much more).

If eggs are always up your alley, why not check out the newest entrant to the bustling hawker centre, Danlao?

Run by a group of young hawkers, the hawker stall, which opened in early December 2022, specialises in rice bowls topped with Cantonese-style scrambled eggs, the kind you find at cha chaan teng (cafe or diner) in Hong Kong.

There are five variations to choose from, with the most affordable being the Tomato (S$4.50), inspired by the classic Chinese tomato egg stir-fry, comprising soft, creamy, and silky scrambled eggs and juicy tomato chunks on a bed of warm Jasmine rice.

Other more substantial options include the Char Siew (S$6), fried Chicken Cutlet (S$6), and Luncheon Meat (S$5), which consists of scrambled eggs drizzled with light soy sauce and thick cubes of savoury wok-fried luncheon meat — hearty and nostalgic!

You can also bulk up your rice bowls with add-ons (for an additional cost) like Prawn ($3.50), Char Siew (S$2.50), and even Crispy Prawn Cake (S$5) — the kind served at Din Tai Fung.

Don’t forget to pair your scrambled egg rice bowl with the stall’s spicy and savoury housemade chilli (reminiscent of Lao Gan Ma) for the full Danlao experience.

The next time you’re in need of a new lunch option in the Chinatown area, you know where to go!
