One thing I remember vividly about hunting down my favourite herbal bak kut teh in Singapore, is excitedly heading over to Leong Kee (Klang) Bak Kut Teh in Geylang and then being super disappointed that there was a long queue. (In hindsight, of course, it makes sense that there was a queue seeing as we have a lack of herbal bak kut teh options in Singapore and mostly have the usual peppery bak kut teh places instead.)
In fact, that was how we discovered Chiak Kway Chap that day since we were utterly famished and did not want to join the queue at Leong Kee – but I digress. Thankfully, with more herbal bak kut teh places popping up like Ge Bi Lao Wang Bak Kut Teh (also located in Geylang), we now have more options and hopefully shorter queues for when we’re craving a good herbal bak kut teh.
Featuring Malaysia-style herbal claypot bak kut teh packed with ingredients from pork belly to pork ribs, enoki mushrooms and fried beancurd skin, the bak kut teh soup at Ge Bi Lao Wang Bak Kut Teh is thick and flavourful and hits the spot. (Especially on cold and rainy sweater weather days!)
And if you’re not feeling particularly keen on soup, they also have a delicious dry bak kut teh version here with a mixture of pork ribs, okra and cuttlefish cooked in dry bak kut teh sauce in a claypot over fire giving it that fragrant wok hei flavour.
Aside from the bak kut teh, the menu also offers braised pig trotters, oyster sauce vegetables with pork floss, salted vegetables, you tiao (fried dough sticks) and yam rice to complement your meal.
So if you love a good bak kut teh, put this place on your list and remember to head over when you’re in the mood for some invigorating herbal bak kut teh!
