Hidden in the quiet stretch of Jalan Senang, TO:YOU Cafe is an underrated spot serving Japanese-inspired brunch and matcha drinks. 

They’ve also got an outdoor seating area that’s pet-friendly, so your furry friends can tag along.

From afar, you’ll spot its vibrant teal-coloured entrance, but step inside and you’ll find its industrial-chic interior with casual, comfy seating. 

The star of the show has to be the Creamy Matcha Udon (S$26), a dish that’s sure to raise some eyebrows. 

It can’t be found anywhere else in Singapore, featuring grilled unagi atop udon swimming in a garlicky matcha cream.

Another popular main is the Ochazuke (S$22), which also highlights matcha. Here, you’ll find grilled salmon and tamago over torched short-grain rice. 

The cherry on top? A unique matcha dashi to pour over (it’s a perfect Instagram moment).

Other mains include Mentaiko Salmon Don (S$22) and Prawn Pasta (S$18).

Not-cha cup of tea? Try menus from their All-Day Brunch instead, like the Ume Shakshuka (S$18).

The dessert menu is equally as inviting, with Gelato (S$5) in flavours like Sea Salt Uji Matcha and Orange Vanilla. Pair it all with the Brown Butter Waffle (S$12). 

But the Shibuya Toast Pistachio (S$14) is calling my name with its thick caramel toast and pistachio custard.

For the matcha fanatics, there’s also the Strawberry Matcha Croissant (S$8) and Dark Matcha Brownie (S$5) with matcha ganache and crumble.

And of course, since TO:YOU Cafe is a matcha haven, you have to get their Signature Matcha drinks (hey, I don’t make the rules).

Classics like the Earl Grey Matcha (S$8) and Matcha Strawberry (S$8) are there. But, go all out with the Mango Coconut Matcha (S$8), or catch the elusive weekend-only Banana Pudding Matcha (S$10).

If you’re more of a coffee gal instead, try the Pistachio Cold Brew (S$8) or the Sea Salt Cold Foam Latte (S$7).

With such an extensive and creative menu, TO:YOU Cafe has clearly put in the work to give us matcha in so many surprising ways!

Brought to you by Japanese wellness and beauty brand WHITETREE, this pop-up boasts floral decor and picturesque desserts and drinks that make you forget you’re in the middle of a bustling mall.

Without a doubt, the canelés by Tokyo-based pastry-maker boB were the highlight of our visit. Beautifully caramelised and crispy on the outside, the insides are soft and slightly gooey. 

While every flavour was genuinely a delight, our personal favourite was the Salted Caramel Chai, which carried a rich, spiced flavour. Other standouts include the Raspberry Cacao and Apple and Caramel.

You can get one canelé for S$6.50, four pieces for S$24, or eight pieces for S$45.

Unexpectedly, I enjoyed the simple-looking Mango Dorayaki (S$7.60). While the pancakes themselves were mediocre, the light cream cheese cream complemented the red bean paste well. And the cherry on top? The fresh, large chunks of mango.

There’s also a range of matcha ice cream available in tiers, from 40% to 100%. We started small with the 40% Matcha Ice Cream (S$5), a milky sweet version of matcha lattes.

Matcha purists have to indulge in the customer-favourite Kiwami Matcha Ice Cream (S$6.90), which shocked me with its bold, intense matcha flavours (just look at the colour difference). 

It’s time to move along to the drinks. For something light and ultra-refreshing, try the Yuzu Butterfly Pea Soda (S$8.50). I’m a sucker for anything yuzu, so this was right up my alley. Tangy, sweet, and fizzy, this is great for a perk-me-up on a hot day.

Of course, the ever-popular Strawberry Matcha Latte (S$8.50) is here as well. Unfortunately, after the Kiwami matcha ice cream, this drink was considerably milder. For those who prefer fresh strawberry puree with a bit of chew, this is a suitable pick.

The Sake-Infused Coffee (S$6.80), with its mix of Kagatobi sake and Ethiopian black coffee, was interesting. Surprisingly, this was really smooth and I didn’t find it bitter (coming from somebody who always takes milk and sugar with her coffee). 

If any drivers out there are worried about getting tipsy, the sake is vaporised in the brewing process which makes this alcohol-free.

I kept returning to the seemingly humble Herbal Tea Alchemy Set (Pot: S$14, Cup: S$6.80) as a palate cleanser between the heavier desserts. Each tea blend is sugar-free and caffeine-free, with subtle floral notes.

Located in Mount Austin, Slow Day Cafe has a unique concept where you can sip on matcha lattes whilst art jamming! 

This spacious cafe is filled with comfy sofas and plush pillows that exude a chill and cosy ambience with a brightly lit art corner tucked away in the back.

Each Art Jamming Session goes for S$45.34 (RM159) per pax for three hours. 

You’ll be provided with all the painting materials including acrylic paints, brushes, palette, and an apron (so you don’t have to be worried about getting messy). There’s no better opportunity to unleash your creativity and paint your troubles away.

Additionally, you’ll get to choose one drink and one cake from the menu! 

Food-wise, they have an extensive signature matcha series featuring different types of cakes and beverages. 

If you’re an avid tea drinker, you’d be familiar with popular flavours like matcha, genmaicha, and hojicha. 

Wind down and treat yourself to drinks like Signature Hojicha (S$4.82, RM16.90), Vienna Genmaicha (S$5.39, RM18.90). or Yuzu Matcha (S$5.11, RM17.90).

The Strawberry Matcha (S$5.10, RM17.90) seems to be a popular pick amongst the crowd. Not only are the aesthetics on point, but the robust matcha flavour complements the sweetness of the strawberry syrup. 

But if you are feeling fancy, the creamy Rose Latte (S$4.25, RM14.90) is said to have a delicate sweetness with a sprinkle of rose buds. 

There are non-caffeine options like the Yuzu Soda (S$4.25, RM14.90) or Peach Soda (S$4.53, RM15.90) that comprises sprigs of fresh thyme and peach slices which sound equally refreshing.

You have to try out their popular cakes like the Hojicha, Genmaicha, and Matcha which are priced at S$7.99 (RM28) each. 

Each gateau cake features a denser, fudgy base with a light cream and custard-like centre and a delicate mousse on top — an indulgent treat that isn’t too sweet or bitter.

For alcohol lovers, there are specialty desserts like the Drunken Tiramisu S$7.98 (RM28) and Rum Cheesecake S$7.13 (RM25) — perfect if you’re in the mood for a boozy pick-me-up. 

If you’re lucky, you might even get to try the Buvette Matcha Mousse or Belgian Chocolate Mousse that features a bear that’s almost too adorable to eat.

Alternatively, you can get the Set of the Day which includes a croissant of your choice and a cup of americano or tea for S$4.53 (RM15.90). 

Otherwise, true-blue matcha lovers can opt for the Matcha Lover (S$4.25, RM14.90) that come with a decadent layer of matcha cream and finished off with a light dusting of icing sugar. 

Switch things up with their selection of savoury croissants like the Mentaiko (S$5.10, RM17.90) or Chicken Floss (S$5.10, RM17.90) that comes with a side of tamago and mixed salad.

So, of course you’ll need something to fuel your day, but sometimes we aren’t exactly in the mood for something too filling. 

Luckily for us, Manbo Bagel is a quaint bakery in Batu Pahat, Johor— about a two hour’s drive from JB — that serves freshly baked sourdough bread and bagels with unique flavour combinations.

It’s not to be confused with the ever-so-popular JB, but it’s nice to switch things up every now and then.

It makes for a quick and simple midday snack and the prices are relatively affordable given that they use quality Japanese flour and natural ingredients.

When you’re there, you have to try the stuffed bagels with different fillings. 

Each bagel has a soft and chewy texture which pairs well with the rich filling from the Japanese-inspired bagels including the Uji Hojicha Chestnut Mochi (S$2.84, RM10) and Purple-Yam & Soy Kinako (S$2.56, RM9).

Both make for a heartier snack that’ll keep your tummy satisfied for quite a while. 

Otherwise the Summer Molly Passion Fruit Yuzu (S$2.56, RM9) or Summer Passonfruit (S$1.70, RM6) comes through with its tangy and refreshing flavour profile — perfect for this sweltering heat.

There are many flavours to suit everyone’s taste buds from dessert bagels such as Double Chocolate Indulgence (S$2.27, RM8) and Mocha-Biscoff Caramelized Apple (S$3.12, RM11) to savoury sandwich bagels like Cheddar-Melt (S$1.99, RM7).

If you’re visiting in a large group, they also have sourdough focaccia or pizza to share.

The Cherry Tomato Cheddar Herbs Focaccia (S$2.84, RM10) features a golden, light, and airy sourdough focaccia bread that is lightly drizzled with olive oil and mixed herbs.

For the same price, you could get the Italian Red Pesto Tomato Chicken Pizza (S$2.84, RM10) or Roasted Potato Turkey Ham Mozzarella Focaccia (S$2.84, RM10) that comprises mixed vegetables and smoky bits of meat.

Regardless of whether you are there for breakfast, lunch or tea, it’d make for a great pit stop with a decent variety of sourdough bakes to choose from.

The speciality cafe from Fukuoka, which used to specialise in matcha desserts and vegan-friendly mains, has undergone a transformation into HACHI x Izakaya Torikin — a cafe by day, a Japanese bar by night.

Interior-wise, nothing much has changed. The concrete walls, wooden accents, and mood lighting still give off old-school kissaten vibes.

However, HACHI is now open for both lunch and dinner, offering a completely revamped menu featuring bar bites, hearty hotpots, and set lunches with Japanese and Spanish influences.

Set lunches

Those who visit during lunch from 12pm–3pm can choose between the 2-course Set (S$25++), comprising an appetiser and a main, or the 3-course Set (S$29++), which comes inclusive of dessert.

Appetisers include the Galician Style Octopus (U.P. S$7) and Flamenco Egg (U.P. S$9), best enjoyed with mains like the Hakata Mentaiko Spaghetti (U.P. S$21), Lamb Chops (U.P. S$28), and Eggplant and Bacon Tomato Spaghetti (S$22).

Complete the course with irresistible matcha desserts like Matcha Cheese Cake (U.P. S$9), Milk Pudding with Matcha Syrup (U.P. S$8), and Matcha Roll Cake (U.P. S$9).

Other desserts exclusive to the a la carte menu are not to be ignored, such as the Matcha Affogato (S$15), Matcha Tiramisu with Warabimochi (S$16), and Matcha Parfait (S$19) — in all their bittersweet and earthy glory.

Dinner eats & bar bites

Those who wish to take their love for matcha up a notch can drop by for dinner (from 6pm onwards) during which HACHI shifts into a casual Japanese bar, and order the cafe’s novel matcha shabu shabu, the first of its kind in Singapore.

Don’t get me wrong — I absolutely adore anything matcha — but shabu shabu? That’s a first.

Each Matcha Shabu Shabu Set (S$58 for 1 pax) comprises a very green bonito-based matcha broth, served alongside Kurobuta Pork Loin and Assorted Vegetables. You are encouraged to savour the flavourful, umami-laden broth with a comforting bowl of porridge, or matchazuke (rice in matcha shabu shabu broth, S$6).

You can even choose to add on A4 Miyazaki Wagyu Beef (S$80) and dip each fatty, gloriously marbled slice into the accompanying matcha and sesame dipping sauce.

All we can say is — don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!

But if that’s a little too out there for you, alternatives include the Hakata Akamaru Torinabe (S$28 for 1 pax), a spicy miso-based chicken hotpot, and the rich Hakata Motsunabe with Shoyu (S$38) or Mentaiko (S$45) — yes, authentic hotpot with offal is becoming increasingly popular in Singapore.

Otherwise, you can turn to HACHI’s extensive selection of tapas-style bar bites and snacks, such as the Bread Tapas with Homemade Potato Salad (S$8), Spicy Octopus Ajillo (S$12) and Crab Cream Croquette (S$12).

Even better — why not pop by during Happy Hour (5pm–7pm on weekdays, 3pm–6pm on weekends & PH) for a Draft Beer, Highball, Matcha High, Lemon Sour, or Glass of Wine for just S$8 each?

While we practice patience and wait for the golden moment when Japan fully opens up to travellers, we can still experience a little slice of Japan right here at Asaru Studio in Singapore!

This interesting studio summarises its offerings very simply as “an experiential retail studio where one becomes mindful of the surroundings, allowing the five senses to connect with goods which may better their daily living”.

Here is where you’ll find a variety of lifestyle products from Japanese clothes to homeware, as well as handmade food items. 

You can have two kinds of experiences at Asaru Studio — Uchi (S$30) or Aruku (which means walk in Japanese, so basically it means just browsing the store). 

To get the most out of the experience, it’s recommended that you opt for Uchi (S$30), which allows you to browse the store, use the S$30 as store credits (for items worth more than S$50) and have a variety of delicately prepared Japanese bites. 

The treats are regularly changed according to the season or even just to the owners’ moods, but customers who have visited the studio have raved about their freshly whisked matcha, homemade strawberry/mugwort daifuku as well as their fluffy matcha swiss rolls.  Nothing too fancy, just simple items that are often paired with tea but are still really good (very apt for the theme of the studio!). 

If you’re looking to take some artsy fartsy pictures for your IG, Asaru Studio also has a very cosy and very Japanese-y aesthetic that’s perfect for that (there are many nooks and crannies that can make for some really nice shots!).

With four outlets in Fukuoka, matcha speciality cafe Matcha Cafe HACHI (抹茶カフェHACHI) has finally made its way to Singapore, setting up its first international outpost, Cafe Hachi, along Clarke Quay.

Cafe Hachi fits right into the neighbourhood of established cafes, patisseries, and restaurants, injecting even more life into North Canal Road.

With its concrete walls, wooden accents, and mood lighting, the interior appears to be a modern take on a kissaten, an old-school Japanese-style tearoom and coffeehouse.

Uji matcha desserts & drinks

The drinks and desserts Cafe Hachi is known for are all prepared using high-quality, single-origin matcha powder derived from 100% Uji tea leaves grown in Wazuka, Kyoto Prefecture.

There are three grades of ceremonial matcha with varying aroma and intensity to choose from: Okumidori (S$5.50 for hot, S$6.50 for iced), Samidori (S$10.90 for hot, S$11.90 for iced), and Asahi ($14.90 for hot).

Okumidori, with its bittersweet aftertaste and strong aroma, is also used in the Matcha Latte (S$6.80 for hot, S$7.80 for iced), as well as most desserts.

One does not need to be a matcha lover to be dazzled by the myriad of matcha desserts on the menu. Highlights include the visually pleasing Matcha Tall Parfait (S$20), Matcha Tarte with Matcha Ice (S$15.80), Matcha Tiramisu and Warabimochi (S$16.80), and Matcha Roll Cake with Matcha Ice (S$18).

Non-matcha vegan-friendly desserts like Gateau Chocolat (S$7.90), Carrot Cake (S$6.80), and Seasonal Fruit Tart (S$7.80) are also available. Most of them are also gluten-free — be sure to check with the staff before placing your order.

Vegan-friendly mains

You can also find a selection of healthy yet comforting vegan-friendly mains like the Buddha Bowl (S$17.80), Rice Gratin with Brown Rice and Vegetables (S$19.80), and Loco Moco (S$26.80). Non-vegan options include the Mentai Pasta (S$18.80) and Chicken Salted Koji-style Charred Butter Soy Sauce Pasta (S$23.80) — I’m loving the sound of the latter.

As the resident matcha lover (or maniac, more like), I’ll be getting my hands on Cafe Hachi’s desserts very, very soon.

Not only are these crepes easy on the eye, but they also come in 4 flavours well-loved throughout Japan: Snowy Matcha, Ama OH!, Nutty Shoyu-Goma, and Shingen Mochi.

Matcha-holics like me would undoubtedly go for the Snowy Matcha (S$10.60) that’s packed with whipped cream, matcha gelato, red bean paste, and crisp white chocolate. If you like the combination of sweet and umami, the Nutty Shoyu–Goma (S$11.40) features a unique caramel walnut soy sauce gelato that may be right up your alley.

And if you’re still racking your brains for a saccharine treat for your significant other, why not gift your partner the kawaii Ama-OH! ($13.90) on Valentine’s Day? It sure beats an overpriced bouquet of flowers.

There is also an option to customise your crepe from S$9.80. Pick between a plain or matcha crepe, choose a gelato flavour, sauce, fillings, and add on extra toppings if you want. The possibilities are endless, so go crazy.

The crepes are seasonal, so who knows when they’ll be taken off the menu? In fact, I’m already thinking about heading to Jewel for dessert as we speak.
