To put it frankly, the capsule wardrobe is a concept with minimalist elements and the goal of it is to maximise the number of looks you can create with a few basic essentials. This not only helps you save time on efficient decision-making in the morning, it is also an option for those who want to stay fashionable without breaking the bank!
When I first started my own capsule wardrobe journey, I experimented with different types of outfits to see what could best be efficient, convenient, and affordable. After much trial and error, here are some fashion must-haves that you can start with on the journey towards building your capsule wardrobe.
1. Basic tee/tank top
To begin, any roster in daily outfits requires a basic shirt and tank top in black, white, and/or neutral colours. By switching up the colours of these shirts, you’re able to easily pair it with a suitable bottom piece.
The beauty of this choice is its simplicity in design. You would be surprised at how much value a plain white tee can bring to your wardrobe!
2. Smart casual pants
On a more personal note and at the risk of sounding melodramatic, I cannot live without smart casual pants or tailored trousers in my wardrobe. This outfit screams minimalistic and convenient, making it one of the essentials you should have in your capsule wardrobe.
Picture this, these pants in any dark or neutral colour topped with a plain or striped tee. The possibilities are endless. Here, I pair it with a plain basic shirt in a neutral colour, truly a minimalist effort.
3. Denim jeans
No capsule wardrobe would be complete without denim jeans. This fashion staple has been a choice since the early 1900s and we can see why. Not only is it easy to style, but these denim jeans can be straight cut or skinny-straight, depending on your preference. Either way, denim jeans are always a go-to for a casual fit that’ll do you no wrong.
4. White sneakers
I know I said I could not live without smart casual pants, but white sneakers is a very close contender to that. The reason why I swear by white sneakers is because no matter what sort of dark or neutral colours you have on your main fit, they always round off any outfit.
I mean, white sneakers will always pair well with a white shirt, or even one in a nude colour. Try it and thank me later.
5. Outerwear
Everyone who knows me personally will know that I’m a big fan of outerwear. Despite Singapore’s hot weather, I have weaved outerwear into my own capsule wardrobe to pull off different variations of outfits. These include coats, blazers, and cardigans in mostly black, white, or neutral colours.
6. Striped shirt/tank top
Besides the basic tee/tank top, a striped shirt or tank top is another top choice for must-haves when building your capsule wardrobe. The stripes add a bit of pattern to the otherwise minimalist concept and it switches things up in a fun way for your fashion!
7. Button-up shirts
For a more formal spin to your capsule wardrobe, button-up shirts are necessary! On top of looking classy and being put together, button-up shirts are one of the best outfit pieces to pair with smart casual pants.
8. Accessories
Last but not least, one of the most important elements to completing your capsule wardrobe look is the inclusion of accessories. These can be as simple as a ring, a statement necklace, bags, or even something practical like sunglasses.
Of course you don’t have to follow everything to a tee, so go ahead and experiment to see what works for you and what doesn’t. Everyone’s idea of a capsule wardrobe is personal, so keep things exciting by switching things up whenever you feel like it!
