Hotpot spots are aplenty in Singapore, so it takes something truly unique to stand out from the bubbling crowd.

Kumachan Onsen Shabu Shabu & Yakiniku, which hails from Japan, has certainly attracted our attention as their servings are like nothing we’ve ever seen before.

When I say teddy bear hotpot, you’re not dining with teddy bears. Instead, you’re dining on a teddy bear. The bear, or as it’s accurately called “Kuma-chan”, is essentially the flavouring.

It sits on your hotpot bowl as if it’s at an ‘onsen’ or hot spring, waiting for hot water to be poured and melt the broth. Plus, each bear is accompanied by a ‘towel’ that’s made out of daikon radish. Isn’t that adorable?

At Kumachan Onsen, you’ll get to choose from six hotpot flavours: Japanese Miso, Soymilk, Chicken Mabo, Gochujang, Bonito, and their signature Collagen. Depending on which you pick, your bear comes in white, red, or brown.

The hotpot sets are perfect for solo dining, starting from an affordable price of S$15.80. Each set comes with unlimited soup refills, assorted vegetables, and your pick of sides: steamed chicken gyozas or noodles.

Don’t forget to hit up the free-flow DIY sauce bar, where you can mix and match your condiments to pair with your hotpot. Unique sauces include Mustang Mayonnaise, Negi Shio Black Pepper, and Wafu Sesame Soy Sauce.

As for the main ingredients, the selection includes Chicken (S$15.80) and Beef Karubi (S$16.80). The latter even comes in half-half options, such as Double Beef Karubi ($21.80) and Beef Karubi & Beef Tongue ($21.80).

That’s not all. Since every table at Kumachan Onsen has a built-in grill, you’ll get to enjoy yakiniku on the side as well. Feel free to grill your meats for free or enjoy the best of both worlds — BBQ and hotpot-style!

If you’re craving just yakiniku, snag one of their sets starting from only S$10.90 for 100g of beef karubi and beef tongue. Each set comes with a bowl of rice, kimchi, and soup.

But if hotpot or yakiniku isn’t your thing, don’t worry! There’s a small menu featuring Japanese curry rice, hot stone bowls, and donburi just for you.

Do note that while Kumachan Onsen Shabu Shabu & Yakiniku uses no pork or lard, they’ve yet to be halal-certified.
