Jubiläum: A Celebration of Symphonic Voices

A whole Japanese strawberry wrapped in a fluffy strawberry-infused cheese mousse and topped with a light cheese souffle layer, a classic pairing of fruit and cheese in an elegant bite.

Beyond the flavors, what makes Cheese Wonder especially compelling is the philosophy behind it. Guided by the theme of “GRAZE EXPERIMENTS”, the brand went a step further than sourcing premium ingredients—they chose to produce them. The milk used in their cheesecakes comes from free-range dairy farming, while the eggs are from free-range chickens. In a thoughtful twist, the chickens there are fed with leftover cake and cookie crumbs from confectionery production, creating a full-circle ecosystem that enhances the quality of the eggs. Through this cycle between cows and soil, pastures and poultry, and farms and confectionery, Cheese Wonder has built a quietly sustainable model that reflects both care and craft.

The exhibit titled Passion is Volcanic: Desire in Southeast Asian Art, explores how desire and sexuality have been represented in art in Southeast Asian societies. It brings together over 70 works from across periods, regions, and cultures, featuring a diverse media of paintings, sculptures, and photography. Intentionally curated to showcase abstract expressions rather than literal interpretations, it encourages visitors to look beyond the obvious and think deeper. 

What to expect

The exhibition is organised in 3 sections—Asian Mythos and Ritual, Conventions of the Erotic, and Public Arenas/Private Interiors. Asian Mythos and Rituals explores spiritual and cosmological narratives behind eroticism, showcasing the human body as a bridge between nature, emotion, sacredness, and spirituality. 

Meanwhile, Conventions of the Erotic showcases how artists have challenged traditional views of the body in the post-colonial era. Enjoy a diversity of perspectives, as some artists present nudity as a form of liberation, while others use it to explore new means of expression and symbolisation.

The last section, Public Arenas/Private Interiors, is a curation of artist voices who used their works to bring marginalised experiences into public discourse. All while pushing against the rapid cultural shifts of the 20th Century. 

Artist spotlight

Spotlighting some works, Alfonso Ossosrio evokes a visceral bodily experience through his dynamic and dense artwork, Clouds of Conscience. Meanwhile, Ahmad Zakii Anwar leans into realist symbolism with Sixtynine, as his humorous artwork depicts two fruits drawn in precarious positions. 

Works by local artists will also be featured, such as Lavendar Chung’s Dissolving into the Same Breath. Using long-exposure photography, she captures bodies in motion as soft, fleeting moments of intimacy.

Tickets are priced at S$5 for Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents, and S$8 for other nationalities. The age requirement is 18 and above, and valid identification is required for entry.

Thus, I set out to look for a solution — I tried Beijing 101 for the first time with its newest treatment, the Tri-Action Scalp Revival, and was pleasantly surprised by the whole experience. Previously, I doubted the efficacy of these haircare treatments; however, Beijing 101’s stellar track record since its establishment in 1974 left me feeling optimistic about my own hair health.

The process 

Before we began, I was a little nervous, not knowing what I had signed up for. However, the reassuring consultant talked me through the 3-step routine—Hydro Scalp Reset, to clear clogged follicles and restore balance in the scalp, Nutrient Booster, to improve scalp condition for fuller-looking hair, and a Follicle Awakening Spray, to stimulate circulation and reduce hair fall —so I fully understood the procedures done to my hair. 

The treatment started with the Hydro Scalp Reset. The hair specialist used a small suction device to unclog my hair follicles, getting right into the nooks and crannies with the small handheld machine and going over every inch of my hair bed. Knowing there was likely an excess of dead skin, impurities, and product on my scalp, the procedure felt very satisfying.

After the Hydro Scalp Reset cleanse, a customised mask was applied to my hair to balance my scalp condition and remove excess oil. Then, my hair was washed, and I received a customised ampoule that was applied to my scalp with the Nutrient Booster, which uses vibration to embed the nutrients deep within my scalp. 

The therapist then gave me a Beijing 101 Signature Meridian Head Massage. He informed me that the signature massage releases Qi, aka energy blockages, boosting circulation and promoting relaxation while stimulating follicles. The massage truly felt relaxing and even lulled me to sleep a couple of times.

Upon completion, I noticed my scalp already feeling a lot cleaner and lighter, and I was excited to see the long-term effects of this treatment. 

My thoughts on the experience 

While at Beijing 101, I was surprised at the number of Gen Zs and millennials stopping by. I realised hair loss, hair thinning, and oily, flaky scalp were not only prevalent among the older generation. 

When I asked the consultant about this, he said that common causes for these concerns include high stress, poor diet, harsh treatments, and even being post-partum—things the younger generation are all too familiar with. 

It made me realise that while people are willing to invest in skincare products and professional treatments, we’ve painfully neglected our scalp care, and the consequences are stark.
