As someone who grew up reading lots of Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is one of the novels that shaped my childhood. And I’ve always wondered: what would be it like if Charlie Bucket took over Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory in present day?
Look no further than Mr Bucket Chocolaterie — Singapore’s very first chocolate factory in the heart of Dempsey.
Having temporarily ceased operations at its retail-only Sin Ming outlet, the homegrown chocolate brand is now focusing on delivering a multi-sensory experience for both the young and young at heart at its flagship store along Dempsey Road.
Spanning close to 5,000 sqft, the experiential space is a contemporary chocolate wonderland, where you can purchase (and sample) artisanal chocolate bars, flavoured bon bons, and more crafted in-house using sustainably-sourced cacao from Asia.
As you embark on a mini tour of the factory, be sure to take a peek at The Bean Room and Chocolate Room (the heart of the chocolate factory), where you can witness the pros at work and learn more about the intricate bean-to-bar process.
Afterwards, pop by the Creation Station, a one-of-a-kind DIY station where you can build your own Customised Chocolate Bark for just S$21.90.
Choose between two chocolate bases — smoky and nutty 72% Dark or earthy and malty 50% Oat Milk — and take your pick from a myriad of inclusions and toppings like Caramelised Peanuts, Freeze Dried Strawberries, and even Popping Candy.
This is the perfect station to hit up if you’re looking to customise a cool edible gift for the chocolate lovers in your life. Trust me, they’ll love it.
Retail therapy doesn’t stop there. Not when you can find The Dispensary, the dedicated retail section at Mr Bucket Chocolaterie selling an assortment of chocolate products, from drinking chocolate to chocolate buttons, granules, and dragees, all of which are either priced by weight or pre-packed at fixed prices.
You are highly encouraged to bring your own jars, in line with the brand’s sustainability efforts.
Other must-buy items are Chocolate Bars (from S$10 — get the festive Maple Pretzel Crunch, a whimsical take on a nostalgic Christmas bar), Spreads (S$15), and even a unique Cacao Wine (S$58 per bottle) that’s sure to impress your dinner guests.
And now for the fun part: The Tasting Room, an aesthetically pleasing cafe with both indoor and alfresco seating (The Cacao Garden), where you can savour chocolate desserts and beverages.
The best way to fully get acquainted with Asian cacao is through the Bean-to-Bar Journey (S$18), a tasting flight that begins with the Cacao Bean Dark Chocolate Dragee, followed by the palate-cleansing Cacao Husk Lemon Tea, and three different whimsical creations — 66% Chocolate Bar, Double Soy Caramel Bon Bon, and 64% Chocolate Passionfruit Sable.
Otherwise, choose from a selection of bakes and entremets like the Chewy Chocolate Cookie (S$4), which incorporates both 45% and 72% single-origin chocolates, Dark Chocolate Choux Puff (S$10), and the festive Warm Spiced Christmas Tart (S$12).
Not to be missed out is the bittersweet 72% Single Origin Hot Chocolate (S$8), also available as a milkshake, that’s served with a torched rosemary marshmallow.
Can’t wait to immerse yourself in the wondrous and ultra-decadent world of chocolate? Start making plans for a visit to Singapore’s very own chocolate factory today!
