It isn’t just humans that come from all walks of life, it’s animals too. Be it coming from a puppy mill, a pet store, or even from the streets, pets always have a story to tell. And if your ears are open to listening to stories from a retired military dog, perhaps, your heart would be for adopting one of them too.
From today to 22 October 2021, the Singapore Armed Forces Military Working Dog Unit (SAF MWDU) will be putting up 13 veteran military working dogs for adoption.
These dogs have dedicated their lives to serving the Singapore Police Force, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) K-9 unit, and the SAF MWDU, and are looking to spend their golden years in a loving home.
All the dogs have gone through basic obedience training, regular health checks by in-house vets, annual vaccinations, and a routine heartworm and parasite prevention programme. Four of them are also HDB-approved. So if you’re interested in finding a new companion, read on.
Retired military dogs from SAF up for adoption
Thor
Male, 8 years old, Labrador Retriever
Can be adopted by HDB households under Project ADORE
If you’re ever in an action movie, Thor would be your bada** sidekick. Just look at that powerful stance! While the real Thor makes bad decisions from time to time, you can rely on this calm and relaxed Thor for good advice and companion. Like all playful children, Thor hates taking baths. He’ll shake bathwater all over you, but his sweet personality makes up for that.
Banjo
Male, 8 years old, Labrador Retriever
Can be adopted by HDB households under Project ADORE
Banjo already looks like your best friend. Charming, lovable, and adorable, this doggo will love you with all his heart and give you his undivided attention. Banjo is always down to have fun and he’ll be more than excited to partner up with you for a run or a game of fetch. However, if you’ll like to spend a day in bed or simply go for a slow walk, he’ll be there for you too.
Dunya
Female, 9 years old, Malinois
Sometimes, you just need someone to listen and a shoulder to lean on, and sometimes, that person is Dunya. An obedient and loyal girl with lots of love to give, Dunya promises to return your love with heaps of affection. Since this retired military dog grows attached to people easily, she’ll fit right in at home.
Rockey
Male, 9 years old, Malinois
It’s all written on his face — Rockey is a hyperactive and fun-loving doggo that’s sure to fire up your day. Though he takes time to warm up to hoomans, once he does, be prepared for lots of kisses and affection!
Jersey
Male, 9 years old, German Shepherd
This ball of floof will be the sweetest dog you’ve ever met. Jersey is a good boi with a chill temperament — so chill that he’ll fall asleep anywhere. However, like all gentle souls, we have soft spots. Jersey needs some encouragement on completing his walks and exercises, but hey, a bag of his favourite treats will easily do the trick.
Salsa
Female, 9 years old, Labrador Retriever
Can be adopted by HDB households under Project ADORE
Salsa has given a lot in service, but she has more to give to the next family she’ll be with. Affectionate and obedient, Salsa will make the perfect house dog for any family. This beautiful soul loves belly rubs and treats, so be sure to shower her with plenty! She will protect you with her life, but she’s afraid of thunder — so do cuddle her when it’s storming outside.
Digger
Male, 10 years old, Labrador Retriever
Can be adopted by HDB households under Project ADORE
Who’s a good boi? Digger is. Sweet and gentle, Digger has a warm and friendly personality that’s sure to melt even the coldest of hearts. He loves playing outside and will give you sad puppy eyes when he sees other doggos having fun without him. He also loves food, so you’ll be sharing your meals with him!
Zeus
Male, 10 years old, German Shepherd
Zeus is definitely a chonker, but he promises to love you more than food. Equipped with a jolly nature, this boi has mastered the art of giving irresistible puppy eyes to get what he wants. He absolutely loves pats and cuddles, and is not shy to nudge you for attention. Obedient and friendly, he’s ready to always be part of your world.
Igi
Male, 10 years old, German Shepherd
Igi is a handsome boi that’s proud, haughty, and sometimes, aloof. He is a lone wolf that is independent and strong, but will love you to death. Though he is perfectly fine on his own, don’t forget to shower him with attention or take him for a walk around the neighbourhood. Walks are his favourite thing and these doggos deserve nothing but the best.
Kimbo
Male, 10 years old, Malinois
Kimbo may look like he’ll pounce on you at any moment, but don’t be fooled by his fierce appearance. This doggo has a heart of gold and has proved himself as a top-performing guard dog. Incredibly loyal and highly intelligent, he is curious and always ready to pick up new tricks.
Gino
Male, 10 years old, Malinois
Like an experienced food critic, Gino loves to savour his meals slowly. You know what they say — the key to a dog’s heart is through his stomach, and Gino will do anything for you for a good meal.
Dan
Male, 11 years old, Malinois
Don’t be fooled by Dan’s calm composure in this picture — he’s probably waiting for the photographer to throw a tennis ball for a game of fetch. As quoted by his handler, Dan has an amazing personality and is a people pleaser. All he wants is to see his hooman happy.
Dan loves fetching tennis balls, so he’s a guaranteed ball of fun.
Roy
Male, 11 years old, Malinois
Roy may look intimidating, but he’s actually a big softie at heart that’s afraid of loud noises. Though shy and timid at first, this retired military dog warms up quickly with lots of love and attention and will unleash a puppy-like side you never thought existed. He enjoys rolling around on grass all day long too, a classic doggo that’s sure to bring you lots of joy.
Adoption and details
These doggos are more than adorable, but hoomans should only bring them home if they’re prepared for the commitment and have enough space. The dogs have dedicated their lives to the force and should spend their remaining years in a loving family and experience life outside the military.
The MWDU will continue to take full care of any retired dogs that are not adopted, but we think that these fluffers deserve a good home.
