Holland Village is one happening place. The moment you step out of the MRT station, you’ll be greeted by a vibrant mix of trendy cafes, restaurants, and bars — all hotspots for both locals and tourists alike.
However, you can escape the hustle and bustle by taking a short five-minute bus ride to this rather hidden spot. Parksuites, located along Holland Grove Road, is an apartment complex but it houses a row of shops and restaurants on the ground floor.
One of these restaurants is Paradise Pizza & Elixir Coffee and Wine, which has ‘relaunched’ to include a new pizza-forward concept. As the headline suggests, the star here is their signature sourdough pizza, featuring a crust that’s been fermented for 48 hours.
As they’re situated in a residential area, most people would tend to overlook Paradise Pizza. The interior is no doubt cosy, providing a quiet and welcoming atmosphere for diners to dine and chat.
But when night falls, I can see the place brimming with life as the cafe transforms to a bistro. They even have a large table that comfortably seats around 10 diners — perfect for dinner parties.
We started off with the Deep Fried Burrata (S$24) for an appetiser. Cutting through the crispy fried exterior unleashed a rich, creamy cheese that oozed out beautifully. The dish is cleverly sprinkled with bits of balsamic vinegar spheres, adding a tangy kick that certainly sparked my appetite.
Other sharing plates you should get include the Chips & Caviar (S$12), Fried Chicken Wings (S$16), and the ever-classic Garlic Bread (S$9) that’s a staple in every Italian meal.
Moving onto the mains, I can’t help but order the Hot Assam (S$22). It’s not just because I love spicy food but also because this flavour isn’t something you often find on pizzas.
It was one of the most Asian-inspired pizzas I’ve tasted yet it worked as the sausage, ginger flower, chilli, and assam all paired well together. While it wasn’t overly spicy to the point I had to drink water in between bites, the pizza offered a nice kick.
For fans of Japanese food, you might opt for the Jap A Dog (S$26) instead. Sourdough pizza is topped with arabiki sausage, furikake, kewpie mayo, and bonito flakes.
I accompanied my pizza with a pasta dish, specifically the Mentaiko Lemon Butter (S$22). I personally found the dish a little too drying for my liking (what can I say? I love my sauce) but the noodles were cooked al dente.
The addition of the lemon butter did help to make this dish more palatable and lighter, though I would still recommend sharing this dish with your dining partners to avoid food fatigue. Unless, of course, you love your mentaiko.
If you’re coming in the evening (or during the day because why not?), feel free to grab a glass of wine or two. I had Pete’s Pure Shiraz (S$14 for a glass, S$58 for a bottle), which is packed full of mulberry and blackberry.
It was light, sweet, and easy-drinking, making it suitable for beginners. However, as I like my alcohol slightly on the heavier side, I’d prefer the La Forge Estate (S$18 for a glass, S$80 for a bottle), a Syrah with both fruity and leather notes.
Or, you can always pair your pizzas and pasta with coffee. I ordered my usual Iced Oat Latte (S$8) but I found it a bit too milky, with the coffee flavour not quite as intense. If it had been a double-shot espresso, I’d have been ready to give it top marks!
I end the meal off with their Darn Good Tiramisu (S$14). And, what a fitting name as the tiramisu was just that — darn good. Each bite melts in your mouth, offering a satisfying sweetness without being overly jelak.
All in all, the food served at Paradise Pizza is unpretentious and straightforward. The place seeks to provide a comforting place for friends and family to unwind together, and it has delivered it.
