Popular Japanese-Western family restaurant Royal Host opens in Singapore with hamburg steaks, omu rice & an iconic onion gratin soup loved by Marilyn Monroe

I have big news for fans of the renowned Japanese family restaurant, Royal Host, for it has finally landed in Singapore.

With a legacy spanning over 50 years, this is their first direct store outside of Japan (they’ve got 223 outlets there!), located at none other than Jewel Changi Airport.

The sprawling 90-seater space sports warm wooden booths, rattan furniture, and cosy ambient lighting, and is flanked by a stunning circular bar — complete with handy charging points.

Now’s your time to get a taste of their famous Japanese-Western comfort food, all of which come with omotenashi, the Japanese art of hospitality.

Signature items include the likes of “ROYAL” Hamburg Steak (S$29.80++) made with premium-quality beef typically reserved for steaks, yielding juicy and succulent meat. Pair it with your choice of sauce: Brown Butter, Black Pepper, or WA-FU Japanese sauce.

Those who’d rather splurge on a proper steak can go for the Premium Beef “ROYAL” Sirloin Steak 250g (S$64.80), prepared using tender and umami-rich “Washu beef”. You’re encouraged to enjoy it with savoury soy sauce and a touch of wasabi!

More of an omurice kinda person? Look no further than the “ROYAL” Omurice Demiglace Sauce (S$26.80), chicken fried rice blanketed in a layer of creamy scrambled eggs, topped with a rich demiglace sauce.

There’s even a Singapore-exclusive Omurice Snow Crab & Chilli Sauce (S$30.80), which sees a special butter rice covered with a layer of creamy scrambled eggs, Nori Tsukadani (seaweed cooked in soy sauce), and chilli sauce.

If you’ve only ever had doria, a savoury baked rice dish, at a certain casual Japanese-Italian chain, this is your sign to try Royal Host’s extra fancy rendition.

The classic COSMO Doria (S$24.80) features two types of creamy sauce filled with chicken, shrimp, chestnuts, and cheese, while the Seafood Doria (S$27.40) sees a special butter rice coated in a thick layer of “American sauce” — a creamy lobster-based mornay sauce — with sweet shrimp and scallops.

You can also eat like Marilyn Monroe (well, sort of) by ordering the bestselling “ROYAL” Onion Gratin Soup (S$7.80), comprising homemade consomme soup with caramelised oniona and a slice of toasted baguette loaded with melty gruyere cheese.

This comforting dish shot to fame when the Hollywood starlet sang praises about it during her honeymoon to Japan in 1954 — she apparently ordered it three days in a row.

There are also pasta options available for those seeking a bit of an Italian twist. I foresee many heading straight for the Seafood and Mentaiko Sauce (S$29.40), pasta with scallops and squid, tossed in a creamy and mildly spicy mentaiko sauce.

Otherwise, take your pick from an extensive selection of grilled meats and seafood, Japanese curry rice, French toast, sandos, and more.

Don’t forget to save some room for dessert in the form of a parfait or sundae; the HOT Fudge Sundae (S$18.40), an indulgent American-style sundae with vanilla and chocolate gelato, topped with banana and hot chocolate sauce, comes highly recommended.

Do note that the restaurant is currently in its soft launch phase and will be having its grand opening on 18 July 2024.

Will you be heading down for your comfort food fix anytime soon?
