The dessert scene in Johor Bahru is booming, and so is the heat.

That’s why you’ve got to check out Alley Dessert, a dessert cafe specialising in bingfen (iced transparent jelly), a popular Chinese street snack, on your next trip across the border.

Although bingfen doesn’t actually taste like much, it boasts a unique soft texture that serves as the perfect blank canvas for toppings like fresh fruits, milk, and syrup on a bed of shaved ice.

Their line-up of aesthetic Ice Jelly desserts are almost too pretty to eat, but once you’ve snapped all the photos you like, they certainly make for a delightful, thirst-quenching treat.

Not sure where to start? The Alley Signature 7 Toppings (S$3.83, RM12.90), with its reliable arsenal of toppings like watermelon, grass jelly, water chestnut beads, peanuts, haw flakes, raisins, and melon seeds, is your best bet.

Otherwise, go for the Traditional 4 Toppings (S$2.64, RM8.90), that keeps it simple — sorta like the good old days — with melon seeds, haw flakes, chopped peanuts, raisins, and blueberries.

However, we can see more diners going for the more unique, fruit-forward flavours, like Lychee Grapes (S$4.46, RM15), that pairs green grapes and lychee with water chestnut pearls, jasmine tea jelly, and jasmine syrup.

Despite featuring “traditional” elements like peach gum and snow jelly (otherwise known as snow swallow, or xue yan), the Iridescent Pandan (S$5.05, RM17) is another crowd favourite. I mean, how can you go wrong with the combination of pandan jelly, mango, and strawberry?

Of course, taro fans are in for a treat, as always, with the indulgent Taro Family (S$4.46, RM15), comprising taro paste, taro balls, pearls, red beans, and vanilla ice cream.

All ice jelly desserts also come with your choice of syrup or coconut milk, if you like it extra sweet.

Would rather go down the DIY route? Take your pick from Plant Based Ice Jelly (from RM6), Sugarless Tofu Pudding (from RM5), and Grass Jelly (RM7) in assorted flavours, which you can choose to further jazz up with add-ons.

With a whopping 29 toppings to choose from, you’re more than welcome to load up on Taro Paste (RM4), Sesame Tangyuan (RM1.60), Yogurt Ball (RM3), and more. Just go crazy!
