If you love Japanese skewers, or yakitori, you’ll be pleased to know that there’s a sizzling new outlet in town serving up a generous fair of yakitori. Located in Bugis Junction, Buta Kizoku serves a series of sizzling prime cuts torched with various sauces like avocado tartar, mentai, yuzu ponzu and more at very affordable prices.
Priced from just S$2 per stick, each skewer comes with a generous cut of meat ranging from Iberico pork to chicken — super value for money if you ask me. The skewers are torched to perfection and then generously topped with unique house-made sauces.
Some classics on the menu include the Shio Belly (S$2), which stars a generous portion of pork belly. The Teriyaki Pork Belly (S$3.50) is a sure-hit with its juicy pork belly and generous glaze of teriyaki sauce — the perfect blend of sweet and smoky flavours.
Mentaiko lovers will thoroughly enjoy the Mentai Mayo Collar (S$3.50), thick and juicy cuts of perfectly torched pork collar; and the Mentaiko Chicken Skewer (S$3.50), which would been juicier if the restaurant have used the chicken thigh meat so that the meat would be juicer. But the real star was the mentaiko sauce, which still had bits of fish egg in the sauce to give it an added burst of flavour.
If you’re mad for garlic like I am, the Garlic Cheese Pork Loin (S$3.50) is a must-have. The skewer features slices of juicy pork loin loaded with cheese and toasted garlic bits which gave it an added crunch.
Another interesting flavour was the Avocado Tartar Collar (S$3.50). I liked that the avocado taste wasn’t too strong and balanced out the bold tartar flavours. If you’re someone who avoids tartar sauce for its pronounced flavours, you’ll appreciate that this avocado rendition was much more muted.
After all that eating, you’re gonna need some bubbly to wash down your food. Pair your dishes with their in-house Kizoku Highball mixed with Tumugi — a premium Japanese spirit. Other refreshing concoctions include the Kizoku Calpis (S$12) and the Yuzu Beer Cocktail (S$14). For beer lovers, there’s also a selection of Fresh Sapporo Beer (S$12) from the tap for you to chug down.
Sides-wise, the eatery serves a selection of authentic Japanese sides like Octopus karaage (S$6.50), Shishamo (S$6.50), as well as a selection of Onigiri (S$4 per piece). The onigiri is lightly toasted on each side before being drenched in teriyaki sauce to give it an added sweetness and crunch. We recommend going for the flavourful Salmon Mentaiko.
Buta Kizoku will officially be open to public on 19 April 2023. What’s also interesting is that they have a cover charge from S$6 which will entitle you to one free drink (including alcoholic beverages) and one starter.
