Affordable cream puffs, black sesame croissants & more at this hidden bakery in Woodlands MRT

by Christabel Tan

As someone who has a complicated love-hate relationship with carbs, I’m always tempted by the sights and smells of freshly baked goods. If I were to ever make a trip down to On’Lee Artisan Bakery, a hidden gem located in the underground link of Woodlands MRT Station on the Thomson-East Coast Line, I would probably go ham. Here’s why.

I’ve heard complaints from folks staying in Woodlands about the lack of artisanal bakeries in the area, but that’s no longer an issue. In fact, they should count themselves lucky, thanks to this one and On’Lee bakery.

Extensive variety of bakes

A staggering variety of bakes are offered, from sweet and savoury scones to freshly baked loaves of sourdough. Croissants are a hot favourite, available in flavours like Pistachio (S$3.80), Black Sesame (S$2.50), Oreo Cream Cheese (S$2.80), and even a Korean-inspired Garlic Cream Cheese (S$2.80). Swoon.

Pick up a loaf of Sourdough (S$5.80), Walnut Raisin (S$5.80), or Banh Mi (S$1.80) for breakfast. Make French toast or tamago sando with NZ Milk Toast (S$2.60). Recreate a British high tea experience at home with Mini Scones (S$1.20 for 1, S$4.50 for 4) and lots of clotted cream. There’s something for everyone.

And c’mon, just look at those ooey gooey cinnamon rolls. Seriously, my mouth is watering as I type.

This is exceedingly rare — top-quality cream puffs sans eye-wateringly high prices. Filled with light chantilly cream, these incredibly value for money cream puffs are retailed in boxes of four. You can try the Original (S$5) or Chocolate (S$6.60), but of course, Matcha (S$6.60) is calling out my name.

Unsurprisingly, On’Lee Artisan Bakery has cakes as well, including Matcha Azuki Swiss Roll (S$8.50) and a rustic Banana Walnut Cake (S$2.20). Seriously, is there anything they don’t sell?

At this point in time, there’s only one question on my mind: why is Woodlands so far away?

Do note that all products are made with halal-certified ingredients; the bakery has stated that they are the process of obtaining halal certification.
