Do film and coffee go together? At Sunday Morning Studios, there’s a surprising blend of coffee, Japanese culture and film memorabilia – with something for everyone.
There are plenty of underrated cafes across the Causeway, and Sunday Morning Studios is a Japanese-themed cafe that actually opened during the pandemic. But what truly sets this cafe apart is its fusion of offerings perfect for Japanese foodies and art lovers.
Get a pick-me up with the cafe’s specialty coffees, where fresh coffee beans are brewed daily using a Japanese style Kalita glass dripping tower to achieve a rich flavour. If you want it to-go, you can also get a cute drip bag (S$1.56/RM5 for 1, S$6.24/RM20 for 5), filled with hand-roasted coffee beans to enjoy back home.
Have your coffee with a bowl of soft udon noodles (S$5/RM16), accompanied with the cafe’s homemade slow-cooked Japanese curry, or try a sando (S$5.62/RM18) – a delicate fruit-filled sandwich with layers of whipped cream.
Don’t forget to browse the cafe’s own collection of plants, sunglasses, KODAK film (from S$8.74/RM28), and vintage records. Occasionally, the cafe does host markets, where you can get a range of plants and other souvenirs. You can also get your film developed at the cafe’s in-house film lab and sent to you at only S$6.24/RM20 for color negatives and black and white film.
For those driving over, the cafe is located just a little off Johor Bahru’s Checkpoint, next to Pasar Karat, a night market worth checking out in the evening. So, if you have no plans for the weekend, take a leisurely drive to Sunday Morning Studios.
