If you’re craving ice cream, but want something that’s less indulgent, the Chrysanthemum Goji Berries, Honey Chamomile & Butterfly Pea Flowers or Tie Guanyin (oolong tea) is the way to go.

Located just ten minutes away from NEX, A Thing or Two is a quaint cafe nestled in the heart of the neighbourhood selling affordable gelato ice cream and waffles. 

Just how affordable are we talking? 

A Single Scoop like the signature Grape Yakult goes for S$5 while the Original Waffle starts from only S$4!

There are other waffle flavours like Muah Chee (S$7) and Pandan (S$7) that pair well with their handcrafted gelato as well.

Alternatively, Moments’ is another cafe situated near NEX that has a good mix of local delights and western dishes — I’d say that it’s family-friendly considering the huge portions and variety that this eatery has.

Get the Dry Ban Mian with Pork Belly and Minced Meat (S$6.80) or Classic Ban Mian (S$6.50).

It’s definitely a place to consider if you can’t decide whether you want local fare or western dishes — this way you’d get the best of both worlds.

9. Oblong 

While lok lok and hotpot are well loved amongst supper-loving night owls, sometimes you aren’t exactly in the mood for heavy food. 

Luckily, Oblong is a late-night ice cream parlour with novelty flavours. 

While it is common to pair waffles with your ice cream, they put their own creative twist to the waffles. 

This includes Charcoal (S$7), Kinder Bueno (S$8) and Ferrero Rocher (S$9) waffles that are loaded with sweet fillings and syrup. 

You can get a Single Scoop for just S$4.20 with flavours like bubblegum, milo dinosaur, and earl grey lavender that will satisfy any sweet tooth.

10. Cafe Gyoen

Cafe Gyoen has a unique Tokyo train-inspired interior for the ‘gram and offers hearty bento sets. 

If you haven’t had the time to make those travel plans to Japan yet, this cafe may have to do it for now. 

Not only do they serve Japanese bentos like the Teishoku Big Breakfast Wagyu Tataki (S$29), there are other hearty and comforting dishes like the Kitsune Udon (S$11.90) and Katsu Curry Don (S$18.90).

11. Clovelly

Fellow north-easties would be familiar with the former chocolate and dessert cafe, Wimbly Lu, that unfortunately closed its doors last year. 

Since then, Clovelly has taken over and offers a seafood-inspired menu with handmade pasta like mafalde and gemelli. 

Crab lovers should get the Crab on Crab (S$24.90) that features a soft shell crab on shredded crab meat pasta in a butter cream and white wine base. 

But, if I must say, the Crab Croissant Florentine (S$22.90) looks even more tempting. 

It comprises shredded crab meat, baby spinach, 63-degree egg slathered in hollandaise sauce sandwiched in between a flaky, fluffy croissant. 

The aesthetics are truly on point with the colourful edible flowers and runny egg yolk.

12. Baker & Cook

Although Serangoon Gardens is known for having multiple supper spots and a vibrant nightlife, there are cafes in Serangoon that are relatively quieter if you want to do work or simply just chill. 

Tucked away in the neighborhood, Baker & Cook lets you munch on dessert pastries and sourdough bakes. 

You can even get gluten-free whole cakes for any upcoming birthday celebrations or special occasions. 

Even better, they’re selling pizzas from only S$24 depending on the combination you prefer. 

Get the seafood forward pizza which boasts shrimps, smoked salmon, and portobello mushrooms or the cheesy pizza with mozzarella, gorgonzola, and raclette.

13. Chu & Co

Unlike other cafes, Chu & Co has a unique cafe concept where there’s only alfresco dining or takeaway options (picture picnic mats and umbrella stands). 

They have a plethora of delectable sweets and savoury delights to get you through the week if you’re ever in need of a pick-me-up. 

Think sourdough buns, sammies, viennoiseries (breakfast pastries), loaf cakes and so much more. 

You have to get the Kopi Bomb (S$14 for six pieces). As someone who doesn’t drink coffee, this flaky pastry has a rich caramelised interior and pleasant coffee flavour. 

I highly suggest heading down early as they are one of the popular cafes in Serangoon that sell out fairly quickly!

14. Dessert Bowl

Go for something different at Dessert Bowl that has traditional Chinese-style dessert bowls with plenty of hot and cold options. 

Get your durian cravings sorted with their Durian Mousse (S$6.30) and Durian Snow Mountain (S$7) that have actual chunks of creamy, rich durian flesh. 

Not a fan of durian? 

Opt for the Mango Ice (S$5.50) instead which is refreshing and naturally sweet with generous servings of ripe mango chunks  — the perfect treat for Singapore’s all year-round summer weather.

15. Folk Yard

Folk Yard features a simple day menu comprising six breakfast sandwiches filled with hearty ingredients. 

At night, they serve sourdough pizzas like the Nothing Fancy (S$17). 

Contrary to its name, the pizza comprises onion bechamel, caramelised onions, and pickled butternut. 

If you’re a fan of Japanese-inspired sandwiches, you’ll be delighted to find that they actually use shokupan for the Breakfast Sandwich (S$14). 

It boasts cheesy scrambled eggs, maple hashbrown, and crispy, candied bacon drizzled with maple syrup — a great way to start your morning.

As you step into the space, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a charming interior filled with dark wood, grey and marble accents — as well as quirky little pops of colours from the fun signboards and decor scattered around the cafe that gives it all the personality. 

Here, you’ll be able to enjoy hearty Aussie brunch favourites and other comforting bites like the Cheesy Vegemite Soldiers (S$14), Roasted Pumpkin Tartine (S$16), Baked Maple Chipotle Chicken Wings (S$18) and more. Of course, we can’t miss out on the classics like the avocado toast which is very aptly named The Hulk (S$16). 

If you’re a bit of a coffee snob, you’ll love that they serve their coffee with no-frills — just straight up aromatic coffee that gets the job done like espresso (S$4) and their Jimmy Monkey Filtron Cold Brew (S$7). If you’re someone that prefers something a little sweeter, you can also opt for their rich and creamy mocha (S$6). 

They also have a small retail section where you can purchase the coffee they carry so that you can start your day right everyday even when you’re not visiting the cafe (and they’re packaged adorably with the Jimmy Monkey mascot!). 

For those looking to be extra indulgent, the cafe and bar also serves three kinds of sinfully boozy milkshakes (S$18) — the Violet Crumble (vanilla ice-cream, butterscotch schnapps, honey and topped off with Violet Crumble), the Dom Pedro (vanilla ice-cream and black nikka whiskey) and the Toblerone (vanilla and chocolate ice-cream, chocolate syrup and frangelico).
