Dear NUS students and those living near West Coast Park, can I just say how jealous I am of y’all?

From the institutional Fong Seng Nasi Lemak to Niqqi’s The Cheese Prata Shop, there seems to be tons of late-night or 24-hour eateries clustered along that particular stretch at Clementi Road.

Now, you guys have a new cafe joining the ranks: I’m Acai, which closes at 12am daily.

How lucky.

Despite having just opened their doors in the last week of May 2024, this shop has already gained a fair share of regulars. I think it’s pretty obvious that the majority of them are students looking to satisfy their sweet cravings at night (not judging, I’ve gone through those late-night cram sessions).

It also helps that the cafe is the only one in the vicinity specialising in acai.

When it comes to the decor, minimalism is the norm among cafes these days and I’m Acai is no different. The Scandinavian-inspired interior may seem repetitive by now but it’s comfortable and homely — exactly what homesick students may seek.

Photo: @i.m.acai/instagram

Of course, considering its name, most people will head to I’m Acai for its acai bowls. Its Classic offerings (S$6.70 for small, S$9.90 for medium, S$14.90 for large) include the signature I’m Acai, topped with the usual fresh fruits, granola, nuts and superfoods, that can never go wrong.

Photo: @cathrynong/instagram

However, what’s truly popular here is the Green Goddess (from S$6.70), evident by the fact that it was sold out while I was there. Go for this option if you need an extra protein boost as it is layered with yoghurt.

Want a custom creation? Its DIY option comes in three sizes to suit your appetite: small (S$7.30), medium (S$10.50), and large (S$15.90), each starting with two bases. Choose from Acai, Chia Pudding and Greek Yogurt, or you can add S$0.60 more for Coconut, Mango, Watermelon Lime, and Chocolate Oat sorbets.

Small lets you enjoy three fruits and two superfoods, medium with four fruits and three superfoods, or indulge in the large and get five fruits and four superfoods.

I’d just like to let you know that the acai base served here contains a higher concentration of acai than artificial sugars. This only means two things: its acai bowls are of more premium quality and aren’t too sweet — good news for those who don’t have a sweet tooth like me.

If you’re feeling sorbet instead, take the owners’ words and try out A Lil Zesty (S$7.30 for small, S$10.50 for medium, S$15.50 for large), perfect for when you need a tangy pick-me-up on those especially hot days.

Photo: @i.m.acai/instagram

I will also recommend pairing its Matcha Latte (S$6.00 for hot, S$6.50 for iced) with an acai bowl for an energy-boost like no other. As someone who’s particular about her matcha, I’m glad that my drink is freshly whisked and prepared right in front of me.

Whether you’re residing nearby or simply around the area, you’ll probably head on down to I’m Acai whenever your acai cravings kick in!

It’s no secret that I have a (completely healthy) obsession with Korean food. I’m always on the lookout to find new places that can satisfy my Korean food cravings and lucky for me, there’s an underrated restaurant located in the west.

Tucked away in NEWest, just a short bus ride away from Clementi, is Nana Bunsik. The cosy store serves authentic Korean food along with homemade kimchi and more. The store is run by a friendly couple who first started selling their dishes online.

Step inside and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported into a homey restaurant in Korea. There’s even a shelf of crocheted Korean food that adds a touch of personality to the store.

One of the most popular dishes on the menu is the Beef Bulgogi Bibimbap (S$18.80). Unlike the regular bibimbap which comes with a dollop of gochujang sauce, the beef bibimbap at Nana’s Bunsik comes with the sweet marinade instead, alongside fresh vegetables, mushrooms, and a runny sunny side-up on top.

The beef was very well-marinated and very tender. I totally recommend leaving the rice to char for a while to get a nice crunchy and sweet scorched rice.

The vegetables and mushrooms also add a nice crunch and flavour to the dish. Top it off with a slice of fresh kimchi and it’s simply perfection.

Another dish that came highly recommended was the Japchae (S$12.80) and having tried it, I can see why it is so popular. The japchae is sweet and fragrant but a little bit on the peppery side.

It comes with pork but there’s also a vegetarian option for those who can’t take meat. The dish comes with a generous serving of carrots, capsicums, mushrooms, spinach, and onions.

I would have preferred it if it was a little less peppery, but the pepper does elevate the sweetness of the japchae sauce. It’s a great option for those looking to get a healthy and fuss-free meal.

I love jjajangmyeon, so of course I had to order it here. Nana Bunsik’s Jjajangmyeon (S$12.80) ticks all the right boxes.

Starting with the black bean sauce, it was super fragrant and a little on the sweeter side. There were also small bits of the black bean in the sauce which adds a nice texture to it.

The dish came with a generous serving of sauce which coated every strand of noodles perfectly. The sauce also elevated the flavours of the lean pork.

The only thing that was missing from this dish was the pickled radish to give it a nice crunch. This might be my new go-to spot for jjajangmyeon now — it’s really that good!

No trip to a Korean restaurant is complete without having some kimbap and we got the Spam Kimchi Kimbap (S$11.80).

The kimbap had a nice mix of ingredients, but it was a little on the saltier side. The radish and kimchi does help to balance out the flavours while also adding a nice crunch into the mix.

Nana Bunsik also has a selection of classic stews like the Kimchi Stew (S$16.80). The stew was fragrant and had a nice spice kick to it. The soup also elevated the sourness of the kimchi with the pork belly adding a nice savouriness. It was the perfect remedy for a cold rainy day.

Speaking of kimchi, if you love their kimchi, you can order their fresh kimchi, radish kimchi or spring onion kimchi for takeaway — I’ll be back for the radish kimchi for sure.

Do you miss the taste of Korea? Head down to this Korean restaurant to satisfy your cravings!

We’re no stranger to the concept of solo hotpot, especially since restaurants finally started offering single pot options. While introverts across the island (like myself) may have rejoiced, there’s just one issue — it’s not easy to come by solo hotpot sets below S$10. If you’re looking for a more economical option, Fu Lu Shou might just be the answer to all your prayers (and no, I’m not referring to the complex in Chinatown).

Photo: 水瓶许愿/RED

Fu Lu Shou opened their first outlet in February 2023 at Epic Haus kopitiam in Toh Guan, and quickly opened a second outlet just a month later at Clementi. If that doesn’t attest to their popularity, I don’t know what will!

The first thing that you’ll probably notice is this S$6.90 hotpot set for one. Despite its affordability, the set comes with pork belly slices, an assortment of vegetables and mushrooms, and even black fungus. Seriously, what a steal! You’ll also get to pick your own soup base — think premium pork bone broth, mala (with customisable spice levels), and tomato broth.

Check out their S$6.90 chicken pots as well — these come in varying levels of heat from no spice to hot (da la).

Of course, we can’t forget about this presentation either. Each dish comes in these fabulously opulent pots (it’s giving oriental) that are sure to elevate your dining experience, even if you’re eating in a kopitiam.

Photo: ueue/RED

Looking to have a good meal with friends? You’ll also find Yuan Yang Hotpot sets for up to four people going for S$48, and include pork, prawns, and so much more. For just S$12 per person, I’d say it’s still pretty worth it.

Photo: @michellelim_star/instagram

If you feel like having mookata, Fu Lu Shou’s got you covered as well — talk about a Jack of all trades! The Value Set for four will set you back only S$9 per person, and has a variety of marinated meats, seafood and vegetables. Feeling a little more bougie? Opt for the Premium Set (S$48/4pax) that has scallops and crayfish on top of everything else.

Whether you’re dining solo or with friends, be sure to head to the west for a wholesome meal!

Believe it or not, ramen that’s both good quality and wallet-friendly is still a thing in Singapore. However, it can be challenging to find restaurants that serve slurp-worthy bowls of ramen under S$10 (in this economy?!), and those that exist deserve all the support they can get.

Here’s a hidden gem in the west that ticks all the right boxes — En Ramen in Clementi.

Photo: @boobear_312/instagram

En Ramen used to operate out of a hawker stall at Toh Guan Food & Drinks Centre in Jurong East (with S$4.50 ramen!) before shifting to an air-conditioned shop space along Sunset Way in late 2022.

Photo: Tan Alfred/google images

Even so, the restaurant sees its fair share of customers (and longtime regulars) eager to satisfy their cravings for ramen, rice bowls, and fried gyoza.

Photo: @liptakang/instagram

Prices for ramen start at S$7.50; you won’t go wrong with the En Original Ramen (S$7.50), which is your standard bowl of rich tonkotsu ramen, topped with tender, slow-braised chashu slices, black fungus, spring onion, and perfectly gooey homemade ajitama egg.

All that for S$7.50? Wow.

Photo: @ry_qw/instagram

If spicy ramen is your jam (it is mine), the En Signature Ramen (S$8.50) takes it up a notch with the addition of both chashu slices and stir-fried minced pork with a secret chilli paste.

Alternatively, you can even go for the priciest ramen option on the menu, the Salmon Bonito Ramen (S$9.50), featuring salmon slices and a light yet still flavour-packed bonito fish broth flavoured with Japanese soy.

Photo: @daniellekopi.sg/instagram

If you’re not in the mood for ramen, choose from a selection of rice bowls and curry rice, with options like the Chicken Karaage Curry Rice (S$8.50), Gyu Don (S$8.90), and even a Japanese Mapo Tofu Don (S$8) — the latter still packs a punch, despite not containing any Sichuan peppercorns (this is Japanese-style, not Chinese-style mapo tofu, after all)

And of course, you’re free to bulk up your meal with sides like salmon sashimi, Chicken Karaage (from S$7.50), Kaki Fry, Breaded Oyster (from S$3.90), and Pumpkin Croquette (S$6).

Photo: Average Guy/google images

Ready to slurp up ramen that won’t break the bank? You know what to do.

Even though I love discovering all sorts of hidden gems, I have a soft spot for authentic and underrated Japanese cuisine. Enter Mochi Mochi Cafe. Run by a Japanese couple, this unassuming cafe-bistro is tucked away in NEWest along West Coast Drive.

Photo: Kimberly Koh

Despite only offering takeaway and delivery services, the cafe officially opened for dine-in last November, much to the delight of their regular customers.

Photo: Chin Zhi Hui/google images

Its homely, no-frills interior is reminiscent of the restaurants featured on the Japanese Netflix series The Road to Red Restaurants List. Oh, what I’d give to be like the character Suda, taking a road trip and visiting eateries off the beaten path.

Heartwarming & hearty fare

Most of the bentos available are priced at a wallet-friendly S$11. Go for the Japanese Curry Set (S$11) or Japanese Beef Set (S$11), all of which are served with an assortment of sides, like pickled vegetables, bamboo shoots, and fluffy potato salad.

An a la carte menu is also available — you can order a Keema Curry (S$8) or Grilled Salmon (S$12), for instance, without the rice and sides.

Photo: @samlivestoeat/instagram

You may be more familiar with the tsukune skewers served at yakitori and kushiyaki joints, but the Tori-Tsukune (S$12) served here is a much healthier alternative. Think tender minced chicken and tofu patties with housemade yakitori sauce.

Photo: PS Goh/google images

Personally, I’d go for the more uncommon Tori-Namban Set (S$12). Instead of the typical fried chicken, Mochi Mochi Cafe’s version consists of stir-fried chicken topped with creamy egg tartar sauce.

The cafe has also recently launched a brand new udon menu, featuring rainy day must-haves from S$10++ like Beef Udon and Spicy Pork Yasai Udon.

Can’t dine in? Fret not, for takeaway and delivery orders can still be placed by calling +65 98629102.

In my opinion, there’s only one thing missing from the menu — actual mochi.

When it comes to comfort breakfast food, nothing makes me more nostalgic than a plate of chee cheong fun. But nowadays, it’s so hard to find a plate of freshly made chee cheong fun in coffee shops and hawker centres — pre-made ones are just not the same. Fortunately, that’s where Chef Wei HK Cheong Fun comes in.

Opened just a few months ago, this stall sells chee cheong fun freshly made to order to ensure maximum freshness and quality.

Not just that though, the chef behind Chef Wei HK Cheong Fun is a dim sum chef with close to 2 decades of experience making dim sum at top restaurants. So you can be sure that their silky rice rolls are comparable to restaurants in quality.

After years as a dim sum chef at Peach Garden, Chef Wei decided to open his own business during the pandemic making his signature dish, chee cheong fun.

After the first outlet at Bedok was met with plenty of great reviews and social media hype, they’ve since opened up a second outlet at Clementi and will be opening a third at Bukit Panjang on 21 September.

The menu here at Chef Wei’s HK Cheong Fun is small with just 4 items, to guarantee tight quality control. Besides your normal Plain Cheong Fun (S$3), Char Siew Cheong Fun (S$4), and Prawn Cheong Fun (S$5), the star item here is a very unique Mushroom Cheong Fun (S$4).

All the important ingredients here are made from scratch, from those soft white sheets of rice flour to their fragrant sauce, and even a chilli made with a secret recipe.

Not only can you watch them roll out your dishes here at Chef Wei HK Cheong Fun, but you can also really taste the striking freshness as compared to the stale pre-made chee cheong fun you’d find at most kopitiam dim sum stalls.

It’s silky, with a nice gentle bouncy chew while the sauce is clean and fragrant without overpowering the delicate profile of the chee cheong fun itself.

While we enjoyed the char siew and sizeable prawns, the must-try item at Chef Wei HK Cheong Fun is the Mushroom Cheong Fun passed down from Chef Wei’s very own shifu.

It’s a rare version that we’ve never seen anywhere else — the rice sheets enveloped a fragrant filling made by stirfrying shiitake and shimeji mushrooms in butter and oyster sauce. The rich earthy taste complements the light chee cheong fun perfectly.

So if you’re fond of chee cheong fun but don’t want to shell out big bucks for freshly made ones, you’ve got to make a trip down to try these for yourself.
