Known as the number one Tempura chain in Japan, the popular Tempura Tendon Tenya has opened its second Singapore outlet at ION Orchard.

If you haven’t heard of Tenya, the tempura specialist has over 200 outlets spread all across the globe. So you can understand why there was a queue that stretched on for hours at its Orchard Central outlet when it just opened last year.

For first-timers popping your Tenya virginity at IOn Orchard, you can’t go wrong with the classic order of the Tenya Tendon (S$8.50).

Easily one of the best value-for-money Japanese rice bowls you can find in the CBD. Tenya’s signature tare sauce is a special concoction that packs a nice blend of umami and gentle sweetness — doesn’t get as jelak as other tempura places.

But of course, the star is the tempura, which consists of prawns, redfish, squid, pumpkin and french beans, each coated with a golden coat of lightly crunchy batter as you’d expect from tempura.

While we think the batter could be a touch airier, don’t let that stop you from paying Tenya a visit at ION Orchard. Because the veggies were stunning — juicy and packed with flavour, especially the french beans. Punching above its price class, really.

Alternatively, there’s also a meatier option of Tori Tendon ($9.90), which comes with karaage, chicken breast tempura, pumpkin, sweet potato, and a tempura soft-boiled egg.

It’s always a pleasure to sink your teeth into a juicy chunk of chicken karaage, which Tenya nails. Plus you get some #eggporn too with that tempura egg!

New to Tenya’s ION Orchard outlet also includes a Salmon Tendon (S$14.90) that not only comes with a tempura salmon fillet and tempura Hiroshima oyster but also intriguing deep-fried camembert cheese and mashed potato.

A sprinkle of Ikura then adds a vibrant splash of colour to the plate. You can also get some spicy noods with their new Spicy Cold Udon, which is only available in a set meal.

Other new additions to Tenya at ION Orchard include Salmon Carpaccio ($7.20), Truffle Chawanmushi ($4), Hiroshima Oyster Tempura ($7.80), and Mentai Fries ($3.90).

Overall, when it comes to affordable and authentic tempura in Singapore, not many can best Tenya. Great quality at even greater price tags — truly a killer combo.
